SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,743, dated May 10, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. J EFFERY, of Canton, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Vehicle-Pole, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved ve- 1L) hicle-pole. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of one arm of the pole, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section taken on line a: w in Fig. 1.

The Object ofmy invention is to provide an adjustable vehicle-pole, which may be adapted to vehicles of different widths.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The pole A is provided with the cross-piece B at its rear end, which is secured to the pole in the usual way. The braces U, which are attached to the ends of the cross-piece B, are secured to the pole A by transverse bolts. The rear ends of the braces O are provided with eyes a, and between the said eyes and the pole A, in each brace O, is formed a lono gitudinal slot 1). The pole-iron D, which is furnished with the eye catits rear end, passes through the eye a on the brace O and extends forward underneath the brace, as shown inv Fig. 2. The forward end of the pole-iron D 5 is perforated to receive the T-headed bolt E, which extends, also, through the slot 1) of the brace and is provided with anut d, by means of which the pole-iron D may be securely clamped to the brace O in any desired position along the slotted portion of thebrace. By means of this construction the width between the eye 0 of the pole-irons at opposite sides of the pole may be varied by moving the pole-irons in or out and clamping them in anydesired position.

In carrying out my invention I do not limit or confine myself to any special connection between the pole-iron D and the braces O, as this may be varied without departing from my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture, a brace O for connecting a pole and cross-bar formed on its outer face at its rear end with a longitudinally-extending eye 66, and having a slot Z1 between its ends, substantially as set forth.

2. A pole attachment comprising the brace 0, having the longitudinally-extending slot 1) and eye a, and the pole-iron D, extending through the eye a along the brace-slot, and the bolt extending through the slot and the iron D, and provided with a nut for clamping the parts, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the pole and its cross-piece B, of the longitudinally-slotted braces O O, secured in the angles at the juncture of the pole and piece B,and each having an eye a at its rear end, the pole-irons D, extending through said eyes and provided with apertures, and the bolts extending through the slots and said apertures and provided with nuts, substantially as set forth.
