' DOOR GUARD.
No. 474,633. Patented May 10, 1892.

PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GLAZIER, OF SALEM, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HAMILTON LOOKVVOOD, OF BOSTON, AND JOI-I SETTS.
N B. ROLLINS, OF LYNN, MASSACHU- D O O R G U A R D SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,633, dated May 10, 1892.
Application filed November 24, 1891. Serial No. 418,002. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GLAZIERJL citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Guards, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door-guards for the purpose of preventiu g persons from accidentally placing their fingers in the door-opening where the hinges are located when the door is wholly or partially swung open, and for this purpose my invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents an inside view of a door provided with :my improved door-guard. Fig. 2 represents an outside view of the same, likewise provided with the door-guard. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged cross-section on the line X X in Fig. 1, showing in dotted linestlie door as swung open; and Fig. i represents a detail perspective view of the improved doorguard before being secured in position on the door and door-frame.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents a door as usual, and B B represent the hinges by means of which it is hung to thejamb or door-frame O in the ordinary manner.
D is the improved door-guard, which is applicable to both the inside and outside of the door, as shown in the drawings. Said doorguard is preferably molded to a semicircular or U shaped section, as shown in Fig. 4, before itis secured in place on the door and its doorframe, so as to prevent it from being caught in the door-opening while the door is being opened or closed.
The said guard is made to extend, preferably, the whole height of the door, or n arly so, and is provided with longitudinal lips or flanges d d, which are secured, preferably, by
means of nails or screws to the door A and door frame or jamb O on the inside or outside of the door, or both, as may be desired.
In practice I prefer to make the said doorguard of some flexible materialsnch as, for instance, rubber, leather, or suitable textile or fibrous material-and when made of such material I prefer to provide each of the longitudinal lips or flanges d with a metal strip d (shown in Fig. 4) for the purpose of stiffening said flanges and cause them to be evenly and uniformly secured to the door and jamb throughout its length without creasing or puckering.
If so desired, the improved door-guard may be made of flexible spring metal without departing from the essence of my invention.
The invention is particularly well adapted for use on doors for railway cars, coaches, and carriages, steamboat state-rooms, &c., as Well as for doors in rooms or buildings of any kind, and is a sure preventive for accidentally jamming and injuring the hand or fingers 'between the edge of the door and the frame or jainb to which it is hinged.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I
wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. The improved door-guard, as described, consisting of a flexible sheet secured to the door and its frame or jamb for the purpose of covering the opening at the place where the door is hinged, substantially as specified.
2. The door-guard, as described, consisting of a molded flexible sheet having lips or flanges provided with longitudinal stifteners, substantially'as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 18th day of November, A. D. 1891.
GEORGE GLAZIER.
