SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,287, dated May 3, 1892.

Application filed January 30, 1892. Serial No. 419,760. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

lde it'known that I, \VILLIAM N. BROWN, of Qu1ncy,in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Account-Files, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifieation.

My invention relates to an improved file in which account-sheets may be kept in a manner that quick and easy access may be had to them.

. My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure I is a perspective View of my improved file with the lid or cover thrown back. Fig. II is an end View. Fig. III is a perspective view of one of the key-levers. Figs. IV and V are vertical transverse sections taken on line IV V, Fig. VI. Fig. VI is a back View with the lid or cover removed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable base, which I have shown as consisting of a bottom 2, ends 3, and a top t.

5 represents a number of keys pivoted to the base. I have shown them pivoted by means of a rod 6, fitted in the ends 3, and upon which the keys are loosely mounted, so that they can be operated independently of each other. On the outer ends of the keys are finger-pieces 7, bearing letters or characters corresponding to the part of the file to be opened and exposed by pressing upon the respective keys.

8 represents a number of key-levers pivoted at 9, preferably by being loosely mounted on a rod 10, fixed to the base. The shape of these levers is shown in Fig. III, (they vary in width, so as not to interfere with each other; see Fig. VL) each lever having a horizontal portion 8, a vertical portion 8, eyes S through which the rod 10 passes, and an arm or portion 8 to be engaged byits key 5 when the lever is to be thrown back. (See Fig. V.)

11 represents a lid or cover connected to the portion 8 of the lever 8, which is operated by the key 5, (indicated by A B, Fig. I,) and it will be readily understood that by depressing the lever the cover or lid will be thrown back, as shown in Figs.I and V, ex-

posing for use the sheets 12 immediately beneath the lid,these sheets resting upon the upper support 13 of the sheets. The top or upper support 13 is secured to the portion 8 of the lever 8 of key 5, (designated by O D, Fig. I.) The next support 13 is secured to the portion 8 of the next lever, and so 011 down, each support being provided with sheets 12, which can be exposed, respectively, by pressing on the proper finger-piece, and when a finger-piece is depressed the cover ll and all sheets above the lever of the fingerpiece which is depressed will be thrown back to expose the desired sheet, as will be readily understood, the supports and sheets thrown back when a key is operated being received by the lid or cover, (see Fig. V,) and when the file is to be closed the lid or cover is si n1- ply pulled over into place by the hand, the levers, supports, and sheets all assuming their normal position without being returned sepa rately.

My invention can be usedas a letter, bill, or account file; but it is especially adapted for use of retail dealers or for concerns who keep a petty ledger, aside from a general ledger, for transient accounts. In the former case it will very nicely take the place of a ledger, and in the latter answer the purpose of a petty ledger and be much more convenient.

I claim as my invention- 1. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, pivoted keys, and hinged levers located between sheets of paper-and arranged to be operated by'the keys so as to expose the sheets of paper at any desired point, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, pivoted keys provided with finger-pieces, levers arranged to be operated by the keys, and sheet-supports connected to said levers, substantially as and for the pur- IOO to be operated thereby, and which is adapted to receive the sheets when the file is open, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, pivoted keys provided with finv ger-pieces, levers adapted to be operated by the keys for moving sheets of paper, and a cover adapted to receive the sheets When the file is open, substantially as set forth.

5. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, keys pivoted to the base, levers pivoted to the base and consisting of a horizontal portion, a vertical portion, and an extended arm, and sheet-supports secured to the horizontal portion of the levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth 6. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, keys pivoted to the base, levers arranged to be operated by the keys for moving sheets of paper, and the guides 14 15, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, levers pivoted to the base and located between sheets of paper, and means for operating the levers, whereby the sheets can be exposed at any desired point, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. In an account-file, the combination of a suitable base, levers pivoted to the base. sheet-supports attached to said levers, and means for operating the levers, whereby the sheets can be exposed at any desired point, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
