LEATHER-CUTTING DIE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,690, dated April 26, 1892.

Application filed April 1d, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LWENDELL P. BosWoR'rH, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Cutting Dies, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a simple and convenient device for cutting out pieces of leather-such as lifts for boot and shoe soles-from sheets or larger pieces and collecting said pieces in a suitable receptacle without the necessity of handling the pieces after they have been cut out.

To this end the invention consists in the improvements, which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a leathercutting apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top view, and Fig. 3 a side view with a portion shown in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts inall the figures.

In the drawings, (t represents a fixed bed or table,which may be of any suitable construction and is here shown as provided with legs a a 1) represents a cutting-die, which is rigidly affixed to the table and projects upwardly therefrom, the cutting-edge Z) of said die being at its upper end. I have here shown the die I) as of the form usually employed for cutting or dieing out the lifts for boot and shoe heels; but my invention is notlimited to this form, as dies of other shapes may be used.

The die I) has a flange 13 which is attached to the bed or table a by screws b or any other suitable means. The table is provided with an opening a communicating with the interior of the die I), said opening being formed to permit the escape from the die of the pieces which are cut out by the die and forced into it by the pressure that causes the cutting operation. the under side of the table and extends downwardly from the opening a to guide the lifts that pass through said opening to a suitable receptacle a, Fig. 3, placed below said chute,

there being a separate chute and receptacle for each die.

It Will be seen that by attaching the leathercutting die to a fixed bed or table so that it projects upwardly therefrom and providing anopening in said bed communicating with the interior of the die, so that the pieces cut by the die will escape through the table, an operator is enabled to very conveniently cut pieces or blanks of leather and accumulate said blanks without handling them after the cutting operation, it being necessary for him only to handle the sheet or larger piece from which the blanks are cut.

I prefer to employ several dies 1) of different sizes on the same table, so that the operator can exercise his judgment in cutting up a piece of leather, moving it about from one die to another, thus cutting it up to good advantage, the blanks cut by each die being collected by themselves, as already indicated. Hence there is no' labor necessary in assorting and collecting the blanks, it being only necessary to remove them from time to time from the receptacles into which they fall.

I claim- The combination, with a fixed bed or table, of a series of dies of different sizes mounted thereon and projecting upward therefrom and having flanges and means for securing them to the bed, said bed having openings communicating with the interiors of the dies, and

chutes extending downwardly from said openings to guide the pieces cut by the dies into separate receptacles, as set forth.
