To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. LIGHTON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and enact description.
My invention relates to an improved lock particularly applicable for use in my improved cash drawerand recorder forming the subjectmatter of my pending application, filed February '7, 1891, Serial No. 380,601, of which this application is a divisional part, and has for its object the projection of a simple and effective device which is easily operated only by one familiar with its working. To this end the invention consists, essentially, in a locking-bolt supported by the case of the cash drawer and recorder and adapted to engage its movable draweranda push-rod having one extremity connected to the locking-bolt for operating the same and the other extremity adapted to be engaged by the operator.
The invention furthermore consists in a pair of locking-bolts arranged in planes one beyond or above the other, levers adjustably secured to the locking-bolts for operating both simultaneously, a lever between one of the locking-bolts and the corresponding pushrod, and in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts, all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters and figures indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a top plan view and side elevation of my improved cash drawer and recorder shown as provided with my improved lock. Fig. 3 is an inverted horizontal sectional view taken on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an isometric perspective of the detached lock shown as resting on its nor mal lower side. Fig. 5 is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken on line 5 5, Fig. a. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 6 6, Fig. 5. Fig. '7 is a similar vertical sectional view looking from the rear forwardly, taken on line? 7, Fig. 5. A represents the outer case or shell of my improved cash drawer and recorder, and B the movable drawer, which is suitably guided therein and is constantly forced outward by a spring C, arranged with one end 0 bearing against the front edge I) of the drawer and the other end 0 bearing against a block A (shown by dotted lines at Fig. 3) and suitably secured to the base of the case.
1) is the lock-frame, adapted to be inserted from the side of the case A through an opening a in said case. This lock-frame consists of the top and bottom walls d d, the inner and outer end walls (Z and d these four walls forming the outer shell of the frame, the projections or cross-walls d extending transversely between the top and bottom walls at d, and a flange (l on the outer end wall d adapted to rest against the outer wall of the case A.
E E represent the locking-bolts, which are arranged in pairs, the separate bolts of each pair being disposed in planes one beyond or above the other, as best seen at Fig. 5. These bolts are rectilinearly guided through suitable bearings or openings e in the end wall (1 and the projections or cross-walls (Z F represents levers, which are pivoted u pon a barf, secured in the side bars of the lockframe, and preferably consist of two corresponding halves f'f having their central portions approximated and their extremities sufficiently separated to receive the lockingbolts.
Formed at intervals upon the locking-bolts are projections E and at the ends of the levers F are slots F, adapted to receive the projections or lugs E whereby the separate bolts of each pair of the locking-bolts are operated simultaneously, and the connecting-levers be tween the bolts of each pair are adjustably secured to the locking-bolts. When desired to adjust the position of the locking-bolts, the extremities of the separate divisions ff of the levers F, which are necessarily flexible, are forced outward, disengaged from the projections E and engaged with the next adja cent set of projections.
As readily seen in the drawings, there are preferably several pairs 1 2 3 i 5 of lockingbolts independently operating push-rods G, connected, as presently described, to each pair of the locking-bolts, and between the separate levers F, connecting each pair of the lockingbolts, are suitable sleeves F mounted on the pivotal rod f. These push-rods G are rectilinearly guided in hearings or openings g in the outer frame-bar (Z and cross-bars d and are arranged with one extremity projecting beyond the front side of the outer wall d for engagement by the operator and the other suitably connected to one of the adjacent pair of locking-bolts for operating said bolts.
The connection between the push-rods and locking-bolts consists, preferably, of a series of levers H, journaled on a rod 7L and separated by sleeves h. These levers H are of similar construction to the levers F, and each extremity of the separate divisions 7L2 71 thereof is provided with a slot 7L3, the slot at one end being adapted to engage a projection g upon the push-rod and at the other end projections E upon one adjacent pair of the locking-bolts, whereby when the push-rod is forced inwardly the locking-bolt connected thereto is forced backwardly from engagement with the drawer and the push-rod connected to the former push-rod is forced outwardly.
In order that the push-rods and locking bolts may return automatically to their normal position, I provide upon the locking-bolts a spring I, interposed between one of the cross-walls d of the lock-frame and a shoulder 2' upon the locking-bolts, and a spring J, interposed between one of the cross-walls d and a shoulderj on the push-rod.
Upon reference to. the foregoing it will readily be understood that one pair of the locking-bolts and the leversconnected thereto may be so, arranged that, as shown at Fig. 3, the inner locking-bolt, or, in other words, the one connected to the push-rod, projects toward the drawer a considerable distance beyond the outer locking-bolt and engages a shoulder B upon said drawer for preventing its outward movement. Another pair maybe so arranged, as shown at' Fig. 5, that both locking-bolts project almost the same distance beyond the inner side of the outer frame-wall d and neither engage the drawer. It will readily be noted that upon forcing inwardly the push-rod shown at Fig. 3 the lever H isrocked on its pivot, the inner locking-bolt forced outwardly from engagement with the drawer, and the outer locking-bolt forced toward the drawer an insufficient distance to engage the same, as shown by dotted lines, thus permitting the retraction of the drawer where no other bolts of the remaining pairs are engaged therewith and no other push-rods actuated. On the contrary, if the push-rod shown at Fig. 5 is forced inwardly the outer locking-bolt is forced toward the drawer a sufficient distance to engage the same with the shoulder B and the inner locking-bolt is forced in a reverse direction a corresponding distance, thus preventing the withdrawal of the drawer. In the drawings I have shown the locking bolts of the first, third, and fourth pairs as disengaged from the drawer and in position to engage and lock the same should their corresponding push-rod be actuated and thelocking-bolts of the second and fifth pairs as engaged with the drawer and in position to permit its withdrawal should only the push-rods be operated which are connected to actuate said pairs of locking-bolts.
In order to conceal the action of the operators hand when forcing the push-rods inwardly, I provide a suitable guard K, adapted to be secured at k to the outer end wall (Z of the loclcframe D.
At Figs. 12 and 13 I haveshown a modified form of lever F, consisting of a single bar having its opposite extremities mounted in slots E in the locking-bolts and provided with the previously-described slots F, adapted to receive cotter-keys passed through the locking-bolts.
The operation of my invention will be readily perceived from the foregoing description and upon reference to the drawings. It is evident that the parts are simple in construction and operation, that the lock may be readily operated to permit the withdrawal of the drawer by one familiar with theproper pushrods to force inwardly, and that others cannot so operate the lock even with the utmost labor. It will be understood, however, that considerable change may be made in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not herein specifically limit myself to the precise detail construction and arrangement of the pa'rts'of my improved lock.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a locking-bolt supported by the case and adapted to engage the drawer and a-reotilinearly-movable push-rod having one end connected to the locking-bolt for operating the same and IIO having the other end adapted to be engaged by the operator, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a lock, the combination, with a frame, of a locking-bolt supported by the frame and adapted to engage the drawer,a leverhinged to one end of the locking-bolt, and a push-rod having one extremity hinged to said lever and the other extremity adapted to be engaged by the operator, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a series of locking-bolts supported by the case and adapted to engage the drawer and a series of push-rods having one extremity flexibly connected, substantially as described, to the locking-bolts and the other projecting beyond the side wall of the outer case, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. The combination,with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a series of rectilinearly-moving locking-bolts having one extremity adapted to engage the drawer, a series of push-rods having their outer extremities projecting beyond the case, and pivoted levers flexibly connected between the locking-bolts and push-rods, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a lock, the combination of a frame with a pair of locking-bolts arranged in planes one beyond the other, a pivoted lever having its opposite extremities pivoted to the lockingbolts for operating both simultaneously, a movable push-rod, and a pivoted lever having one extremity flexibly connected to one end of the push-rod and the adjacent end of one of the locking-bolts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a locking-bolt supported by the case and adapted to engage the drawer, a second locking-bolt connected, substantially as described, to the former locking-bolt, so as to be moved simul= taneonsly therewith, and a push-rod having one extremity connected, substantially as described, to one of the locking-bolts and having its opposite extremity adapted to be engaged by the operator, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a locking-bolt supported by the case, a second locking-bolt,a lever hinged to said bolts for operating both simultaneously, a second lever hinged to one of the locking-bolts, and a pushrod having one end hinged to the latter lever and the other end adapted to be engaged by the operator, substantially as and for the purpose described.
S. The combination,with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a pair of locking-bolts arranged in planes one beyond the other, a pivoted lever having its opposite extremities adj ustably pivoted to the lockingbolts, a push-rod having its outer extremity projecting beyond the frame, and a pivoted lever having one extremity pivoted to the push-rod and the other to one of the pivoted levers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a pair of locking-bolts arranged in planes one beyond the other, a pivoted lever having its opposite extremities adj ustably pivoted to the lockingbolts, a push-rod having its outer extremity projecting beyond the frame, a pivoted lever having one extremity pivoted to the push-rod and the other to one of the pivoted levers, and a spring for forcing the foregoing parts to operative position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
10. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a lockingbolt supported by the case, projections on the looking-bolt arranged at intervals thereon, a lever provided with a slot adapted to be engaged with said projections, and a push-rod having one end hinged to said lever and the other adapted to be engaged by the operator, substantially as described.
11. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a pair of locking-bolts arranged in planes one be yond the other, a series of projections on the locking-bolts, a pivoted lever pivoted at its central portion, with its opposite extremities slotted to receive the projections on the locking-bolts, a push-rod having its outer extremity projecting beyond the case, and a spring for forcing the foregoing parts to operative position, substantially as described.
12. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a locking-bolt supported by the case and adapted to engage the drawer, a push-rod having one extremity adapted to be engaged by the operator, and a movable lever having one end hinged to said push-rod and the other adj ustably connected to said locking-bolt, substantially as set forth.
13. The combination, with an outer case and a drawer movable within the case, of a series of locking bolts supported by the case and adapted to engage the drawer, a series of pushrods having one extremity adapted to be engaged by the operator, a pivotal pin, a series of levers mounted on said pivotal pin at intervals and connected to said locking-bolts and puslrrods, and sleeves mounted on said pivotal pin between the levers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
