HENRY J. VOGEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEXVYORK, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM VOGEL & BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
BREAST OR TOP FOR METALLIC VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,274, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed November 27,1891. Serial No. 413,236. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. VOGEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Breast or Top for Containing-Vessels, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in breasts and tops for vessels within which liquids may be stored and packed and the conten ts sealed against escape, and especially pertains to improvements of the top or breast to which the seal or closure is applied.
My invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings,where- 1n- Figure 1 is a view of the invention having a plain circular flange to receive a cap or lid and adapted to be applied to a surface of any part of a metallic vessel. Fig. 2 is a view showing the Vertical flange made with threads in the outer wall of the flange and the inner wall left plain. Fig. 3 is a View wherein the flange has both walls screwthreaded and to which either an outside or inside fitting cap may be applied, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the invention applied to a portion of the can or vessel other than the top.
A designates the top or breast of a can or other vessel having my invention applied thereto, the plate and flange being formed in one piece integral, the flange being crimped This cap-flange 1 consists of a circular vertical flange adapted to receive and hold a cover and may be plain and smooth, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or itmay have the inner wall plain and the outer wall screw-threaded, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or the flange may be formed with threads in both Walls, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings at 2.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a breast or top piece adapted to be attached over an opening in thevessel, as a sheet-metal can or the cans or vessels of other material used for shipping and containing fluids.
The invention consists, as stated hereto fore, in a single piece of material formed with an integral vertical flange composed of two thicknesses of metal compressed into adjacent supporting positions, so that the flange will be reinforced or strengthened, and the metal within the flange constituting the floor or base may be cut out and the flange left standing, ,without ,detriment to the security and safety of the seal of the closure applied thereto. It will be perceived that when the metal within the flange is out out the flange will still be standing strong and stiff and not nearly so liable to be bent or kinked by the usages to which it may be subjected, and the cap or lid have a firm and staple connection to the flange. This because of the double wall of metal of which the flange is made up. The floor of metal within the flange may be made continuous, or it may have a filling-hole made in it. In the latter instance a cap may be secured to the flange or plate by solder, or it may be provided with a'valve to close the hole. These matters of closures are mentioned here to show the manner of practicing myinvention to completion. They do not form part of my present invention and are not shown, as they are well known in the trade.
It is apparent that my invention may be applied to other parts of a vessel than the top, and may be fixed and secured to any vessels adapted to contain a liquid, as the outer extending portions or flanges of the metal afford means for either soldering or otherwise connecting the plate to the vessel.
Having thus legally specified and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A top or breast for a vessel, made of a single piece of metal and formed with an integral vertical cap-flange composed of two thicknesses of the metal, and a floor at the base of the inner wall of the vertical flange integral therewith, substantially as described.
2. A top or breast for a vessel, made of a single piece of metal formed with an integral vertical cap-flange composed of two thicknesses of the metal and provided with screwthreads, and an integral floor at the base of the inner wall of the vertical flange, substan tially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses- HENRY J. 'VOGEL.
