ATENT' JOHN L. DU BOIS, OF DOYLESTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
PEN-WIPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,148, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed March 7, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. DU 13018, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doylestown, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pen-'Wipers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of penwipers wherein the wiper is supported upon standards, which standards also act as a penrack by means of hooks placed in their edges.
The object of my invention is'to produce a device which will be more efiective in wiping pens and which will last much longer than the devices hitherto used.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a top perspective View of my invention.
In the drawing the reference-figure 1 denotes a'base, upon the opposite ends of which are rigidly secured two vertical standards 2 and 3, having their edges provided with hooks 4 for the reception ofpenholders.
My pen-wiper proper consists of a seriesof disks 5, made of felt or other absorbent material, placed side by side upon a shaft 6, which shaft is journaled in bearings 7 in the top of the standards 2 and 3. Metal guards 8 are placed on either end of the shaft and on the inside of the standards to protect the felt disks 5 from being worn by contact with the standards. On one end of the shaft is rigidly secured a wheel 9, by means of which the disks and shaft may be turned in their bearings. A wheel is used in the present instance; but it is evident that other equivalent means could be successfully used to turn the shaft. The other end of the shaft is provided with threads, which receive a thumb screw 10.
Serial No. 424,037. (No model.)
Placed between thethumb-nut and the standard is a washer 11, by means of which the thumb-screw is prevented from wearing the face of the standard.
When using my wiper, the pen is drawn across the felt disks 5 untilthe edge over which the pen has been drawn is coveredwith ink. When such is the case, it is very hard to clean a pen, and I then loosen the thumb-screw 10 and revolve the wheel 9 until a clean edge is presented, when I again tighten the screw 10, which holds the shaft and disks in a rigid position. In this way my pen-wiper will last a much longer time than others that have been man ufactured, and when the edges of the disks are completely covered with ink they may be removed and fresh ones placed on' the shaft, when it is again ready for use.
This wiper can be made at an exceedingly 'low cost, and at the same time present an atand means, substantially as described, for
turning the shaft, as specified.
3. In a pen-wiper, a series of disks mounted upon a shaft, in combination with vertical standards, upon which the shaft is journaled, and a thumb-screw and washer for rigidly securing the shaft to the standards, in the manner substantially as described.
4:. The combination, in a pen-wiper, of a se ries of absorbent disks placed upon a shaft which is journaled in vertical standards, a wheel upon one end of said shaft, whereby the shaft and disks can be revolved, metal guards placed between the inner face of the standards and the disks, and a thumb-screw and washer upon the opposite end of the shaft, In testimony whereof I affix m y signature in whereby the shaft is made rigid with the standpresence of two witnesses.
ards, all arranged and adapted to operate in T 7 the manner substantially as described. JOHN DU hols 5. The herein-described pen-wiper, pro- \Vitnesses:
vided with a series of Wiping-disks mounted MARY L. DU BOIS, J12,
on a revoluble shaft, for the purpose set forth. HELEN M. DU 1301s.
