UNITED STATES PIERRE PAULIN FAURE, OF LIMOGES, FRANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,110, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed July 30,1891. Serial No. 401,157. (No model.) Patented in Trance November 28, 1890, No- 210,504, and in England March 7, 1891, No. 4,145.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PIERRE PAULIN FAURE, of the city of Limoges, France, have invented an Improved Machine for Decorticating Ramie and other Textile Plants, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France for fifteen years, dated November 28, 1890, No. 210,504, and in England for fourteen years, dated March 7, 1891, No. 4,145,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved machine for decorticatin g raniie and other textile plants.
The machine, which may be mounted on wheels or fixed, is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a front elevation, of the machine. detail view of one of the operative parts.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts in all the figures.
X is the beater-drum, mounted in bearings at the upper part of the machine.
C C are plain or fluted feed-rollers.
Y is a concave or breast substantially concentric with the beater-drum and terminating vertically beneath the axis thereof.
T is a table from which the stalks are supplied to the decorticating-drum.
M is a pulley, around'whioh passes a carrier belt or apron K, which also passes around another pulley (not shown) placed at a distance from the machine, for which purpose one of the traveling wheels R is removed, and the other wheel R is sunk in the ground, so as to enable the machine-frame B to rest thereon. This carrier-belt or apron K moves in a direction parallel to the axis of the beater-drum X and carries the decorticated fibrous tresses after they leave the beaterdrum to one side. (See Fig. 2.) The pulley M is driven by worm-gear r o.
P is the driving-pulley.
P P P P are the pulleys of the belts driving the worm-shaft and feed-rollers O G, which are geared together by pinions e, and 2f is one of the horse-shafts.
The other parts of the machine will be readily understood from the drawings.
The stalks to be-decorticated are placed on Fig. 3 is a table T, seized by the rollers C O, and presented upon the concave Y to the action of the beater-drum X, whereby the woody portion is broken, separated from the external portion, and discharged at a point directly beneath the axis of the drum X and above the belt K in the direction a b, Fig. 3, while the fibrous tress or strip hangs down, as shown at c d. This novel method of dividing and separating the Woody from the fibrous portion of the stalks constitutes one of the characteristic features of the invention, and results from placing the carrier-belt K parallel to and below the axis of the beaterdrum. At the moment of release from the nip of the feed-rollers the end of the tress or strip is projected by the beater-drum into space, so as to fall upon the carrier-band K.
The machine may be arranged and combined in various ways, While still retaining the same mode of operation.
I claim 1. The combination of the beater-drum X with the concave Y and feed-rollers O C and with the carrier-belt K, arranged to receive the decorticated tresses astraddle its surface, and with mechanism, substantially as described, for moving said carrier-belt in a direction parallel to and below the axis of the beater-drum on that side toward which the lower end of said beater-drum revolves, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the movable frame B and its supporting-wheels R R with the feed-rollers O C, beater-drum X, and means, substantially as described, for actuating the same, the concave Y, and carrier-belt K, said belt being placed below and adapted to move in a direction parallel to the axis of said beater-drumXwhen one wheel R of the truck is removed and the frame B of the machine remains stationary, andwith the pulley M and worm-gearr 12, substantially as described.
The foregoing specification of my improved machine for decorticating ramie and other textile plants signed by me this 16th day of July, 1891.
