Be it known that we, CHARLES FRIES, WIL- LIAM H. RICHARDSON, and ISAAO W. HACK- ETT, citizens of the United States, and residents 0f Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,have invented certain Improven1ents in Oar-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of certain improvements in the construction and arrangement 0f ear-braking meehanism by which the braking' power may be exerted to better advantage than heretofo1e and in which all the working parts a1e placed irnmediatelyben eath the body 0f the car and above the trucks at as greata I 5 distance fron1 tl1e ground as possible; f0r the purpose 0 f preventing the clogging 0f the parts by dirt.

Eaeh truck is provided with four of these rods F and brake-levers E, the levers being arranged in pairs and one pair being adapted to the wheels on oneside 01: the truek and each pair being pivoted t0 a single 1ever G, the 0011- nections between eaeh of a pair of rods F and 5 5 the lever G being 0n the opposite sides of the pivot-pointgof thelatter. One end of the bar I is square in cross-seetion and is adapted to a squared orifice vvithin the bracket J, fixed t0 the truck, the outer end of Ehe bar being provided with an opening for the recepion of an anti-frietion roher carried by the brake-rod K. Between the bracket J and an adjust-' ing-nut h on the bar I is a spring 713, which acts normally to keep the brake-shoes e from contact with the periphery of the ear-wheels. Pivoted t0 the bottom of the ear is a lever L, (shown more clearly in Fig. 4,) one end of the lever being bifurcated. and adapted to tl1e piston-rod d of the pressure-eylinder D, am]. secured to or forming part of the lever is a drum Z, to whieh are eonneeted the ends of ehains 01' cab1es m, extending from the drum over guide-wheels n 110 one end. 0f the brakerod K, so that upon the operation 0f the piston-rod d and the consequent movement of the lever L the drum Z will be partially rotated and Will draw the brakerods K K toward each other with suffieient force t0 operate the brake- 1evers and stop the car. 0
The connection between the lever L and tl1e piston-rodd is such that the working force operates only in one direetion, and the pistonrod is provided With a nut d, by whieh the lever L may be moved to a greater 01' less ex- 5 tent, as required. This pis'ton-rod d exten'ds entirely through the eylinder D and is provided on its opposite end. with an adjustable nut d between which and the end of the cy1- inder is a spring d which serves to return the piston to its normal position after the brak es have operated,

The various parts are adjustable for wear, and the brake-shoes normaily are within a short distanee from the wheeis, so that but a slight movement 0f the brake-lever Z is re quired to sei; the brakes.
Having thus deseribed 01117 invention, we clairn and desire 00 seeure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a ear-brake, of the levers E E, pivoted so theframe 0f the truek, brake-shoes earried by said lev ers, the pivoted 1evers G, rods eonnecting the levers E and G, a cross-head, links eonneeting said cross-head to the levers G, and mechanism f0i operaing seid cross-head, substantially as speeified.
2. 'Ihe combination o f the levers E E, pivoted to the frame 0f the truck, brake-shoes czu-ried by said levers, the 1evers G, pivoted to the truek, adjustable rods conneeting' the levers E and G,a cross-head, links connecting the levers G to the cross-head, guides for said eross-head, said eross-head 'being provided With a curved slot k, and a brake-rod having one 0f its ends adapted to Seid durved s100, substantially as specified.
3. The ccmbination, in a earbrake, 0f the brake-levers E E, pivoted t0 the fra.me 0f the truck, brake-shoes earried by said 1evers, the pivoted levers G, a guided cross-head, links conneoting the levers G t0 seid cross-head, a guided bar on whieh said erosshead is carried,and means f0r adjusting seid eross-head 0n the bar, substantially as speeified.
4. The combination, in a ear-brake, of the levers E E, pivoted t0 the frameof the truek,
the levers G, pivoted to said truck, and rods F, each having one end. eonnected t0 the 1evers E E and their opposite ends pivoted 110 the leverG on the opposite sides of the'pivotpoint 0f the 1ever G, the eross-head, the links h, conneecing the 1evers G to said cross-head, a guided bar carrying said cross-head, and a spring between said eross-head and a. fixed point, substantially as speeified.
5. A brake-lever system oornprising 2. pivoted 1ever L, a drum thereon, eha.ins or cables extending frorn seid drum t0 the brake-rods, stationary guiding-wheels n for said ehains, the brake-rods,brakes adapted 130 be operated thereby, and a pressure-cylinder. for operating upon said lever L, substantially as specified.
6. A braking system cornprising the brakes and brake-rods, the lever L, centra1ly pivoted beneath the am, a drum earried thereby and adapted so operate the brake-rod, a pressure-v cylinder, a, piston vherein, a. piston-rod adapted t0 aet upon said 1ever L, and brake-rods N N, extending from said lever to the handbrake-wheels, substantially as speeified.
7. The combination of the pressure-cylinder, its piston, a piston-rod eonneeted thereto, an adjustable nut on said piston-rod, and a. brake-lever pivoted t0 the cm am] having one of its ends in contact with said nut, bu1; free 120 n1ove independently of the piston-rod, With brake-rods connected 110 said lever, substantial1y as speeified.
