SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,962, dated April 12, 1892.
Application filed August 22, 1891.
- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH W. COLLINS, of Sherrill,in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invent-ion relates to the construction of snap-hooks, and particularly to that class which are made from a single piece of metal.
My object is to produce a snap-hook from a single piece of metal, as Wire, bent and curved so that the extremity of the hook is normally locked into an eye in one arm of the body and also so that said wire is further so bent as toalways guide said hook into the locking-eye, said lock preventing the straightening out of said hook under longitudinal strain.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the snaphook closed. Fig. 2 is alike View of the same partly open. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
I take a piece of suitable Wire and first bend one end at an angle approximating a right angle, as at a, then bend it so as to form the hook I), then bend it so as to form the loop or ring or coil 0, then bend it so as to form the eye (Z around the end a, then bend it downward, as at c, then bend it upward around the lower member of the body, as at f, and bring the end beneath the end a, as at It, so

that said ends abut against each other and one serves as a stop to prevent the members of the body from spreading beyond their normal positions. It will be seen that the eye d forms a socket to receive the inwardly-bent end of the hook and retain it against longitudinal strain, and thereby preventing it from being straightened out and operating to reinforce the hook; also, that the loop around the lower member created by the bends e and f creates a parallel-sided loop-guide, whereby the end of the hook is always guided to its seat in the eye 01; also, that said loop also forms a stop or barrier to retain the hook upon any article and to hold the article Within the hook and to prevent it from sliding toward the other end of the snap.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A snap-hook constructed from a single wi re' and consisting of a body having substantially parallel sides connected at one end by a spring loop or coil, an eye upon the upper side lying in a plane at substantially a right angle to the plane of the body, a loop extending from said eye across said body around the lower side and extending upward nearly to said eye, said lower side being extended forward and bent to form the hook, and an arm projecting partially across said hook and fitting freely through said eye and engaging with the end of one side of said loop.

It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 472,962, granted April 12, 1892, upon the application of Jeremiah W. Collins, of Sherrill, New York, for an improvement in Snap-Hooks, were erroneously issued to said Collins as owner of said invention; Whereas said Letters Patent should have been issued to The Oneida Community, Limited, of Kenwood, New York, said Oneida Community, Limited, being assignee of the entire interest in said invention as shown by the assignments of record in this Office; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the ease in the Patent Office.
