DOCUMENT-FILE. I.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,920, dated April 12, 1892.
' Application filed December 14, 1891. Serial No. 415,035. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may con/cern.-
Be it known that we, JosEPH ARTHUR Dus RIVIERES and JOSEPH PIERRE PRUDHOMME.
citizens of Canada, residing in the cityof Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Provinceof Ontario, Canada, have invented certain -new and useful Improvements in Document- Files; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of our invention is to provide a lile that is both simple in construction and effective in operation and to provide a supplen mentary document-case to be placed in the compartment containing the document-lile, in the manner to be' hereinafter described.`
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section through the file-case, showing the same closed. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing same open for access to the documentvile. Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, but showing the supplementary case drawn out. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the follower and guide-rail. Fig. 6 is a cross-section onv line 6, Fig. l.
A A2 represent the top and bottom and the sides of a compartment in a cabinet for the The top and botobject of which Will be hereinafter explained. 'B is a rectangular case adapted to lit snugly and slidingly in the said compartment, open in front, and occupying about one-half the depth of the said compartment.
C is the document-file, secured by the hinge c to the front edge of the bottom of the slid` ing case B. This file C consists of the bottom D, sidesd, and end D2. compartment when in the position shown in Fig. l and is on its outer side Aprovided with a linger-hold d2 and label-holder d2. When in the open position, Figs. 2 and 3, it forms the bottom of the le. On the inner side of the end D2 are two grooves E, running parallel to each other and reaching the full length of the said end. A guide-plate E2 is secured to the said end, its sides projecting over to the center of the grooves E. This plate does not quite reach to the bottom of this compartment; but a space e is left at thefront end. The
This end closes the` The space e is left for the insertion of the n.
gers, and the stops e2 prevent the follower being withdrawn in front. A stop G is secured to the front of the follower at its lower edge. This stop Gr forms'a right-angled shoulder g in line with the bottom edge of .thevfollowein The sliding rectangular case B is provided with grooves H, guide-plate H2, space h at the end, and stops h2 in front, si milar to the grooves and guide-plate E E2. case .I fits snugly in the sliding case B. The sides slope down toward the front jso that there is ample room to .put in papers, &c over the front edge, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower rear angle of this case J is provided with two turned-in fingers K, similar to the fingers f and adapted tofit the guide-plate H2. A finger-ring la or other contrivance is provided 011 the front of this case.
In order to prevent the sliding case being Withdrawn, a pin m is provided in the bottoni of the case B, passing through the guide-plate' H2. This pin projects into theslot a.
The operation of our device is as follows: The follower is placed on the guide-plate by the fingers being passed through the space at the end. The papers are then placedbehind the follower, which is vthen pressed close against the papers by pressure being applied to its lower part. The tendency of .the folded papers to expand then throws out slightly the top of the follower, causing the stop G to bind on the guide-plate E2 and hold the papers in position. The :follower may be released from contact with the papers by pressing in the top, which releases the stop from the guideplate and allows the follower to be Withdrawn. When the file is full, the papers may be placed in the supplementary case, the fingers holding it when drawn out. (See Fig. 3.) The pin drawn out; but should anything make it necessary to entirely withdraw it it may be done by lifting up the pin fm, or should the le and The supplementary in limits. the distance the sliding casemay be case be stuck by removing the ease under it the pin fm may be pushed up through the slot a.
We are aware that two or more file-boxes placed one behind the other in the same compartment and hinged together is not new, and such we do not broadly claim.
We claim as our inventionl. In a docu1nentle,ihe combination, with 1he file O, of the rectangular sliding ease B, 1he grooves H on the bottom of said case, the guide-plate H2, the edges of which project over to the center of said grooves, the space h at one end of the said plate H2, the stops h2, and the supplementary case J, having inturned iingers K, the said fingers being adapted to engage and be held by the edges of the said guide-plate, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a document-file, with the ile C, having a sliding ease hinged thereto,
of the sliding and removable supplementary case J, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a document-file, with a file C, hinged to a sliding oase sliding in a Signed at Ottawa this 10th day of Deeem-v ber, 1891.
