UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN RATOLIFF AND SEBERN THOMAS LAWRENCE, OF COUSHATTA, LOUISIANA.
SHOVEL-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,817, dated April 12, 1892. A Application filed November 18, 1891- Serial No. 412,331. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN RATCLIFF and SEBERN THOMAS LAwRENon, of Coushatta, in the parish of Red River and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Shovel-Flows; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in shovel-plows; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and inthe combinations of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claim. The object-of ourinvent-ion is to construct a plow which will work both sides of the row by straddling the same, but which-will be so constructed that the line of draft will be only on one side of the plow-frame and not in the center thereof, whereby the horse is enabled to walk in the center of the space between the rows and not interfere with either of them, as is now the case when plows of the ordinary construction are used in this way.
A further object of our invention is to so construct the frame-work of the barrow that the second or short beam may be placed on either side of the main or draft beam, as the work may require, thus enabling the operator to Work both sides of either the right or left hand row, as he may prefer.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isa perspectiveview of our improved harrow. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, showing the second beam on the opposide side of the draft-beam in dotted lines.
A represents the main or draft beam, B a second or shorter beam, and G D rounds which connect the said beams. The ends of these rounds are screw-t-hreaded, as shown, and placed on these screw-threaded ends on each of the beam sides are the nuts E, which hold the beams securely in position. By this construction it will be seen that the shorter beam 13 may be placed' on the opposite side of the main beam A, if so desired, by simply extending the rounds O D on the opposite side of the said beam, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.- 2, and securing the short beam B thereto.
F represents plates, which are secured to the opposite sides of the forward end of the main beam and which are provided with a series of eyes G, as shown.
H represents a connecting-bar, which is forked at its rear end, as shown, for the purpose of engaging pivotally the forward endof the short beam B, the opposite end of the said bar being connected by means of the hook J to the eyes G. A series of these eyes is provided, enabling the short beam to be adjusted to any desired position laterally. in relation to the main beam. Extending upward from the round 0 is the upright I, to the upper end of which the handles are secured in the usual I manner, their-lower ends being connected to the beams by bolts, as shown.
The standards K are constructed in the ordinary way and are arranged on each of the beams, as shown, being clamped in position by bolts passing over the corrugated plates L on the upper sides of the beams.
Having thus described our invention, we claim In a shovel-plow, the combination, with the parallel beams A B and an adjustable connection between them, of a bar forked at its rear endwhere it is pivotally connected to the end of the beam B, a hook at the forward end of the said bar, and plates secured to the opposite sides of the forward end of the beam A, and loops on said plates which are ongaged by thehook on the bar end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN RATOLIFF. .SEBERN THOMAS LAWRENCE. Witnesses:
