To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, REUBEN H. LITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Oak, in the county of Campbell and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Cultivators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference 'markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention aims to improve the structure of corn and cotton plows or cultivators so as to enable their operation to be more effective and satisfactory than the implements now in use; and to this end it consists in the device constructed substantially as hereinafter speci fied and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plow embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the various parts and the lower portion of the standard separated from each other, and Fig. 3 a transverse section.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a curved standard or stock having suitable provision, as hereinafter described, for its attachment to a beam. At its lower end is provided an offset portion a, to which the operative or active parts of my plow are attached.

B designates the plow foot or share for turning up the soil, and it consists simply ofa concave plate with a pointed front end. It is secured to the oifset portion a of the standard by a headed bolt passing through an opening in it and in said portion a and a nut on the bolt in the usual way. At the rear portion of the foot and extending upward and leaning slightly outward is a plate 0, constituting a guard or fender for the plants being cultivated, in that it prevents the too full throwing or deposit of earth over upon them by the plow-foot. Said guard is provided with a substantially right-angled extension 0, by which it is secured to the standard A, said extension being placed between the plow-foot and the upper side of the offset a and held by the samp bolt used for said foot. The

opening 0 for the bolt is enlarged to allow adjustment either backward or forward or laterally. In reality, as said opening is larger than-the bolt-head the plow-foot serves to hold said extension to the standard. To the outer face of the guard or fender I bolt a flat plate D, which inclines rearward and upwardly and whose function it is to throw or bear the dirt or soil to the plants being cultivated. Said plate has a downward extension d, by which it is bolted to the guard or fender 0. Two bolts e e are employed to secure it in place, and for the purpose of adjustment for varying its angle of inclination a slot is provided, through which the rear bolt passes. By making the angle more abrupt the bearer-plate, where the surface of the ground has formed into a crust, will be more effective, in that it will crush it and not merely flake it off.

The bearer-plate is designed more especially for use in plowing corn for the first time and cotton the second time; but in plowing cotton the first time it should be taken off. This will allow the plow to be used so close to the plants as to be touched by the guard or fender, which will neither hurt them nor allow the dirt turned up to be thrown over upon them, but will cause it to be passed up over the plow and back into the furrow made thereby to be operated upon by the usual scraper. The offset a of the standard affords aclear space between the guard and the body of the standard for the dirt from the plow to pass through. I make the standard A of one continuous piece of bar-iron and .form the offset portion a simply by suitably bending the bar into the shape shown. Said offset comprises the lateral bend a, the two parallel separated downward extensions 0 a connected at their lower ends, and the inward lateral extension 6. at the upper end of one of the extensions a For attachment to a plow-beam the upper end of the standard is bent to form a U- shaped clip a whose open end is uppermost and whose sides have vertical slots, through which and the beam passes the attachingbolt, such slots being provided to enable the standard to be adjusted vertically to change the angle of the plow. A bolt G, passing through the standard to the rear of the clip a and into the plow-beam, constitutes the center on which the standard moves for such adjustment.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination, the plow-foot, the guard or fender rising vertically therefrom, and the horizontal bearing-plate extending outward from said guard, substantially as shown and described.

2. In combination with the plow-foot, the vertical guard or fender and the bearer-plate attached to and projecting from the latter and adjustable to change its angle of inclination, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. In combination, the plow-foot, the vertical guard having a horizontal extension, the bearer-plateprojecting from said guard, having a vertical portion, and two bolts passing through such portion to attach said plate to the guard, the rear one of said bolts being passed through a slot in said portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. In combination with aplow-beam, a plowstandard having a U-shaped slotted clip engaging said beam, the boltfastening the clip adjustably to the beam, and the second bolt in the rear of the clip serving as a center of motion for an adjustment of said standard, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
