CHARLES F. WILSON, OF BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO.
DEVICE FOR DUMPING CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,648, dated April 12, 1892. Application filed'tTune 22, 1891. $erial No. 397,055. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern' Be it known that I, CHARLES F. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breckenridge, in the county of Summit and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Device for Dumping Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements on a device for dumping cars, and forming subject-matter of Patent No. 413,488, granted November 19, 1889.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for clamping the rear axle and preventing a car recoiling during the operation of dumping.
A further object of the invention is to improve the general construction of the device and the manner of securing the same to a cross-tie.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in'the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a car and a device for dumping the same, the dumping device being shown in elevation and the parts being shown in position preparatory to dumping. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the parts in position when the car is dumped. Fig. 3 is a plan view, the body or frame of the car being removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the dumplng device. Fig. 5 is a detail perspectlve view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a bed-plate, which is secured to a cross-tie 2 by a clip 3 and bolts 4, and is provided with Vertical perforated ears 5 and a central longitudinal supportingflange 6. The ears 5 are preferably formed integral with the bed-pla e, and so is the central flange 6, which is provided with beveled shoulders 7, forming a rib 8, adapted to support and form a stop for the angle trip-lever 9. The bed-plate is provided with perforations 10, adapted to receive the vertical bolts 4: and the clip 3, and the latter is u-shaped and has L-shaped sides which depend vertically from the bed-plate and extend horizontally beneath the cross-tie 2, and is adapted to clamp the bed-plate thereon, and the vertical ends of the eration of dumping.
sides of the clip are threaded and are provided with nuts. The angle trip-lever is pivoted at its main angle by a removable bolt 11, which is adapted to be withdrawn to detach the angle trip-lever, and the arm 12 of the latter is provided at its outer end with a nutsocket 13, and it is adapted to be employed as a wrench to screw the nuts and secure the bed-plate to a tie or remove therefrom. The other arm 14 is provided with an extension 15, which is arranged at right angles to the arm 14:, and extends longitudinally of the angle trip-lever, and it is provided with a longitudinal opening 16-to receive a latch l7,and the outer end of the arm 14 is bifurcated, and the inner end of the latch is pivoted in the bifurcation. The outer end of the latch is provided with a thumb-piece l8, and intermediate its ends the latch is provided with a. shoulder 19, which has one side beveled and is adapted to engage the rear axle 20 of a car 21 to prevent the car recoiling during the op- The car 21 is adapted for the transportation of ores, coal, and like substances and has its body 22 hinged and adapted to be tipped to dump the load from one end of the car. The arm 9 of the angle trip-lever is engaged by the front axle of an approaching car of the class described near the point where the load is to be dumped, and the arm 9 is prostrated or thrown to a horizontal position, and the arm 14 is raised and brought into position to engage the rear axle which is clamped by the latch 17, and by suddenly arresting the truck of the car the body is caused to tip and discharge its contents. After the car has been dumped the latch is raised by hand, and the car by moving back reverses the operation and sets the angle triplever to engage another load.
It will be seen that the dumping device may be readily secured to a cross-tie and removed therefrom and is adapted to prevent cars recoiling while being dumped.
What I claim is 1. The combination of the bed-plate having perforated ears and provided with the longi tudinal supporting-flange arranged between the ears and the angle trip-lever pivoted between the ears, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the bed-plate proflange extending longitudinally of the bedprovided with threaded ends and nuts and plate and adapted to serve as a stop, and the depending vertically from the bed-plate and I5 angle-lever pivoted between the ears and havadapted to extend horizontally beneath a 5 ing an extension 15 and provided with an cross-tie, substantially as described.
