JEW- ELERS SPRING-SNAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,616, dated. April 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. EDGE, a resident of Montrose, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved J ewelers Spring-Snap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the manufacture of spring snaps or catches, and more especially to that class employed in the manufacture of various articles of jewelry, although the invention is adapted to and capable of use in other classes of work.

The invention consists in the novel construction of the case for receiving the snap or catch, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substautially as hereinafter described, and finally embodied in the claim. I

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shell or body of a cylindrical snap-case. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank adapted to be secured to one end of the cylindrical shell and close it. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a blank provided with a central hole and adapted. to cover the other end of the cylinder-shell, the central hole to receive a spring-snap. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a complete cylindrical snap-case embodying my improvement. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a right-angled shell or body. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a blank adapted to be seen red to one end of the shell shown in 6 and close the same. Fig. 8 is a plan view of a blank provided with a central opening and adapted to cover the other end of the'shell, the central opening to receive a spring-clasp. Fig. 9 is a perspective View of a right-angled snap-case embodying my improvement, and Fig. 10 is a longitudinal section on line 10 10 of Fig. 9.

In the drawings, a represents the shell or body of a snap. (Shown in Fig. l as cylindrical and in Fig. 6 as rectangular.)

b is an elongated plate of thin metal struck up in a die and of any desired shape, the central or enlarged portion being of the size and adapted to fit over one end of the shell. The other blank 01 is formed in a similar manner,

adapted to fit over the other end of the shell,

and is provided with a central opening e to receive an ordinary spring snap or catch. (Not shown in the drawings.) The ends or wings f f of the plates 7) d are adapted to be folded at right angles to the central parts of said plates, so that they lie against the periphery of the tube when the central parts of the plates are placed over the open ends of said tubes, as shown in Figs. 4C, 5, 9, and 10.

In constructing my improved snap-case the shell or body a is cut of the desired length from a tube of cylindrical, prismatic, or analogous form, and of a predetermined size. The blanks I) and d (shown in Figs. 2, 3, 7, and S) are then applied to the ends of the tube for which they are respectively fitted, the central portion of each blank being ap plied to the end of the tube and the projecting ends or \vingsf of the blank turned down upon, so as to closely enfold the body of the shell, as shown in Figs. 4 and 9. The turning down and fitting of these projecting ends f of the plates 1) d can be done by a die or other mechanical means, as will be understood. When thus connected and arranged upon the shell, the tips of the projecting ends f of the plates 1) and d can be soldered to the outer side of the body of the shell.

I do not intend to limit myself to the exact shape or configuration of the shell or of the plates b d, as various shapes can be employed without departing from the scope of my invention.

By the use of my invent-ion the parts a b d can be conveniently assembled. The junction by solder of the tips of the plates 1) cl to the exterior of the case a can be readily accomplished.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The tube a, combined with the end plates b d, that are placed against the ends of said tube, said end plates carrying wings f, that extend along the outer circumference of said tube a and are attached thereto, one of the end plates having the catch-opening 6, substantially as herein shown and described.
