To all whom it may concern:
Be itkuown thatI, OLOF EMIL LUNDSTEDT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electro-Magnetic Valve-Controllers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for controlling the supply of steam in a steamheating apparatus, and has for its object to provide for the automatic control of the admission of steam to steam-circulating pipes and radiators by means of an electro-magnet in an electric circuit governed by a thermostatic device.
It consists in the combination, with the steam-supply pipe, of a valve actuated by an electro-magnet, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of my improved steam-valve and valve-controlling mechanism; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof in line a: a; of Fig. l.
In the drawings, A represents the cylindrical valve chest or case for the steam-valve. The open ends of this valve-chest are closed by suitable heads A A, adapted to close the same with a steam-tight joint.
B is a lateral port formed longitudinally in the inner periphery of the valve-chest and which is made to communicate, by means of a passage C in the wall of the case A, with a nozzle D in a coupling-piece formed on the outer periphery thereof integrally therewith, and which is internally threaded or otherwise adapted to receive a steam-pipe. A second port F, of any convenient shape and having an area equal to the port B, is also formed in the inner periphery of the valve-casing to communicate by means of a passage C with a second internally-threaded nozzle D in the coupling-piece, so that when the two ports B and F are open there will be free communication through said ports and the valve-chest from the steam-pipe connected to the one nozzle to-that connected with the other. The nozzles D D in the coupling-piece for the valve are preferably disposed at aright angle with the axis of the valve and in a right line with each other to facilitate the insertion of the valve in a straight line of piping.
The lateral longitudinal port B within the cylindrical valve-chest A is governed by a radial valve G, oscillating upon a central axis corresponding with the axis of the cylinder, the valve being fitted upon a suitable rod or spindle or between pivot-pins W W, journaled at each end in bearings formed in radial arms T T, made integral with the heads A A of the valve-casing.
H H represent an electro-magnet fitted upon the cylindrical valve-chest A, with its poles extending into the chest. The poles of the magnet are so placed with reference to an armature K, mounted upon arms or a plate I, extending radially from the spindle or axis of the valve as that when the armature is drawn into contact with the magnet the valve will be swung to an extreme position to fully cover and close the port B, the valve being carried automatically to its opposite position to open said port by means of aspring, which may consist of a flat plate J, interposed between the magnet aud its armature. The movement of the valve G to cover and uncover the port B is limited in one direction by the contact of the armature with the magnet and in the other by means of a set-screw or stop R upon a radial arm S, projecting from the axis of the valve and made to contact with the magnet or other inner projection from the wall of the cylinder. The magnet H is placed, by means of suitable conduct-- ing-wires L L, in circuit with abattery M, and the circuit may be opened and closed automatically in manner well known to the art by a thermostatic device N of any approved description.
In the use of my invention the valve is interposed in the pipe supplying the steam for heating an apartment or a building at any suitable point between the steam-generator and the heating apparatus, the two sections of thepipebeing connected, respectively, with the threaded nozzles D D in the couplingpiece of the valve-chest A, so that communication is established between the nozzles through the valve-chest and its ports B and F. The valve G, governing the port B, is held open automatically by the action of the spring J. Hence under normal conditions a free circulation of steam is permitted through the valve-chest. If, however, the temperatureof the apartment heated by the steam and in which the thermostatic device N is located passes above the normal point and becomes excessive, the electric circuit between thebattery M and magnet ll will be closed by the action of the thermostat. so as to excite the magnet, whose armature K will be thereupon drawn to the magnet, and thereby operate to turn the valve G and close the steam-port B, so as to shut oit the steam-supply from the heating apparatus. So soon as the temperature has been sufiiciently reduced in the apartment to reverse the action of the thermostat. and open the circuit the armature K will drop back under the stress of its spring and the valve G will be opened to admit a fresh supply of steam.
I have found it advantageous to fit a glass plate E in each end of the valve-chest A to permit of a ready inspection of the valve.
I claim as my invention 1. A cylindrical valve-casing having a peripheral port, a radial valve governing said port and oscillating upon an axis coinciding with that of the casing, an armature carried by the valve upon the opposite side of its pivotal axis, an electro-magnet mounted externally upon the casing, having its poles extended through the same to attract the armature and move the valve in one direction, and a spring operating to retract the armature and carry the valve in the opposite direction, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a cylindrical valve-easing, of a lateral coupling-piece having its nozzles in a right line with each other to admit of being interposed in a straight line of pipe and which communicate sepa' rately with peripheral ports in said casing, a radial valve governing one of said ports and oscillating upon an axis coinciding with that of the casing, an electro-magnet mounted upon the casing, with its poles extending inwardly through the same, and a spring-actuated armature carried by the valve to be attracted by the magnet, and thereby move the valve, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
