SPIRIT LAMP,

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM O. MONFORT, OF PAWVTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
SPIRIT-LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,506, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed May 4, 1891, Serial No. 391,475, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM C. MoNFoRT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Spirit-Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spirit-lamps which are used for the purpose of heating curling-irons, soldering-irons, and the like, in which the alcohol-chamber consists of a cylindrical tube fitting telescopically into an outer tube or case, the outer tube having ends or heads of a shape suitable to hold the instrument heated; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a lamp which shall combine compactness when not in use with adjustability of length when in use, and, second, to combine with such a lamp a holder for the iron or instrument to be heated. These objects are accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire lamp, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In Fig. 1, 0 represents the outer cylinder or case of the lamp. A and B are the heads or ends of the outer case and serve both as standards for the lamp and as holders for the curling-iron or other instrument to be heated. These ends are securely fastened to the case 0 by soldering or some equivalent method. D is the inner case or spirit-chamber of the lamp and slides telescopicallyinto the case 0. Near the outer end of D a section of the case is removed, leaving an opening, which is shown at E, covered with wire-gauze.
F in Fig. 2 represents a chamber formed by the partition H, which chamber is filled with cotton or some equivalent porous substance. G is a covering of asbestus, and E is a wiregauze. The alcohol or otherinfiammable liquid is contained in the chamber F. As is readily seen, the point of ignition at E may be adjusted with reference to the head B, so as to accommodate itself to irons with either long or short shanks or handles without affecting the compactness of the lamp when closed. \Vhen not in use, evaporation is prevented by the cap I fitting closely against the head B.
Fig. 1 shows the lamp partly open, and Fig. 2 shows it when closed.
The concaved upper parts of A and B keep in place the instrument heated.
The entire lamp, excepting the contents of the chamber F, is constructed, preferably, of sheet-brass or other metal.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a spirit-lamp, of the heads A 13, having their upper edges concaved, as described, with the case 0 and the sliding tube D, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as set forth.
ABRAM O. MONFORT.
