SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,087, dated April 5, 1892.

Be it known that I, CARL ROBERT VIE- HOFER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the present invention is to provide a corset-fastening which can be easily closed or nnclosed under the bodice of the dress-that is, without first having to unbutton said bodice. I attain this obj ect by dispensing with the buttons and slits or holes arranged in the corset-steels, and in use up till now, and substituting therefor a bolt and spring-clasps, arranged as hereinafter de scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of one of the corset-steels forming the fastening. Fig. la is a section on line a; in Fig. l. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the other corset-steel, and Fig. 2n a section on line y y in Fig. 2. Fig. 2b is a part side elevation of Fig. 2.'

To the steelA are riveted the spring hooks or catches a a, the form of which may be clearly seen from Figs. l and la. To the other corset-steel B are attached the locks h, which are constructed in the following manner: Referring to Fig. 2, a bridge or casing b is attached to the steel, having its frontside open for the reception of the spring-hook 0,. Its opposite side, however, is bent round, forming a stop which prevents the hook a from penetrating too -far through the lock. Attached to the steel inside the lock is the catch d, consisting of a projecting metallic piece `having an inclined surface, Fig. 2, over which the hook slides on being inserted in the lock, and a vertical side, which arrests the said hook afterits'spring-point has passed behind it. The number of such looks and hooks arranged on the steels is optional and varies with the length of the corset.

If it is required to open the corset, the lever f should be raised, whereby the bolt c will be slid down the steel, the projections on the same will pass into the locks behind or under the hooks a a, compressing the same, when the corset, owing to the pressure of the waist inside, will open. On closing the corset the bolt c must rst be raised again and the hooks inserted in the locks, as hereinbefore described.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and the manner in which the same is performed, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
