Description

(No Model P GOSS SINK CONNECTION.
No. 472,045. Patented Apr. 5, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
SilNK CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,045, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed June 8, 1891- Serial No. 395,490- (No model.)
To all whom 232'; may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN Goss, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of New London, county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sink Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved joint or connection between the bowl or sink and the waste or soil pipe, where, owing to the rusting of the nuts and screw-threads of the pipes and couplings of the parts as ordinarily con= structed, much difficulty has been found in making satisfactory repairs.
The object of my invention is to remedy this difficultyand to form a connection that will permit the parts to be readily and quickly disconnected for repairs and as readily reunited when the repairs required are made; and to this end it consists in the combination, with a sink, waste, or outlet cup provided with a notched or recessed annular bottom, of a perforated disk or annular collar on the short section of pipe connecting therewith, having lugs or proj ectionsmatching said recesses and screw-threaded below said lugs to receive a nut, by means of which the collar and lugs are drawn snugly into place, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a sink with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view, enlarged, of the sink-cup or wasteoutlet, showing the soil-pipe applied. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the interior of the sink wastecup, and Fig.4 a side view of the flanged section of pipe and the soldering-nipple and their coupling-nuts.
A indicates the sink tray or pan, and B the Waste or outlet cup thereof, and which may be cast with the tray or pan or otherwise rigidly secured thereto in any suitable manner. This cup is made cup-shaped, or, more accurately speaking, in the form of an inverted frustum of a hollow cone, having a fiat inwardly-projecting annular flange b at its bottom, provided with a series of notches or rectangular recesses b b open on top and into the central opening C.
D is a short coupling-section of pipe having an annular collar 61 formed on its upper end and provided with lugs 01 cl, pendent from and formed on the collar and pipe D. The lugs or projections correspond in number and arrangement with the recesses 19' and are designed to fit snugly therein. The pipe-section D is of an external diameter adapting it to pass through the waste-outlet C in the bottom of the cup B, and its upper end adjacent to the collar 01 and fora short distance below the lugs d is left smooth at (P, fitting the walls of the opening C, and is screw-threaded below said point to receive a nut E, by means of which the collar cl and lugs d can be drawn snugly into place. A packing-washer can be interposed between the nut E and the bottom of the cup, as also between the collar d and the inner face of the annular bottom I) outside of or around the lugs b if desired, for insuring a tight joint. The lugs b effectually prevent turning of the pipe D relative to the cup and consequent displacement of or loosening of the nut.
F indicates a soldering-nipple, to which the waste-pipe extension may be connected in any usual manner, and F the coupling-nut connecting said nipple with the pipe-section D, said parts being of any usual or preferre construction.
By the construction described it will be seen that the pipe-coupling D can be readily removed for repairs, renewal of packing-washers, or other purpose, and as readily replaced when the other needed work is done, and at the same time the threaded parts of the construction are eifectually covered and protected from the wet and consequent rust common to theordinary construction of the parts.
Having thus fully described'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a sink or bowl, of a conical waste cup projecting downwardly from the lower face of said sink and provided said lugs, and the clamping-nut, substantially with a notched flange at the lower extremity as and for the purpose described. IQ of said cup, a pipe-coupling section having In testimony whereof I have hereunto set an annular flange, the external diameter of my hand this 5th day of June, A. D. 1891.
5 which is the same as the internal diameter of FRANKLIN GOSS.
the bottom of said conical cup, the pendent \Vitnesses: lugs projecting downwardly from the lower GEORGE GOSS,
face of said flange, the screw-thread below HARRIS T. FITCH.
