SAFETY ATTACHME NT FOR CABLE OR ELECTRIC CARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,750, dated March 29, 1892. Application filed September 12, 1891. Serial No. 405,516. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT RAYNAL, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Safety Attachment for Cable or Electric Cars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved safety device for cable and electric cars; and the object of my invention is to provide a cable or electric car at one or both ends with a platform for throwing people from the track and having a rotating device that brushes or sweeps the person struck by the train or parts of their bodies still remaining on the track from the rails to prevent their being crushed by the wheels.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, which will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional plan view of one end of a car provided with my improvement, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the covering for the rollers, which covering is provided with the protuberances; and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fi 3.

The carAis constructed in the usual manner and is provided with the steps B, and in advance of saidsteps .has a peaked platform 0, having the usual rail D. From the bottom edges of the rails D curved flanges E extend inward and downward, and in rear of said flanges two rollers F Fare journaled under the platform in suitable supports, which rollers are arranged about at an angle of ninety degrees to each other and extend diagonally across the rails G. Each roller is preferably provided with a covering H of soft rubber, suitably molded and provided with a number of protuberances J. Said rollers are rotated from the car-axle K by means of chains L,

passing over sprocket-wheels M on the axle and N on the shaft of the rollers, said chains also passing over the guide-pulleys O. The chains are crossed, so as to cause the rollers F to rotate forward and upward, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2.

In case a person stands on the track, he is struck by the peaked front of the car and thrown sidewise and clear of the track, while the flanges E prevent his clothing or members being drawn in over the tops of the rollers. It may occur that a person falling permits an arm or leg to still restlon the rails, which member would be crushed by the wheels if proper provisions are not made, and to prevent this the rollers F are provided. The yielding protuberances J brush the arm or leg of the person from the rails without bruising or crushing the same, and at the same time said rollers do not rotate so rapidly as to create a current of air and raise the dust, as a brush or similar device would.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 1. The combination, with a car, of a peaked platform having a depending flange along its front edge, two rollers mounted below the platform with their upper sides in rear of the flange, the rollers extending diagonally across the rails and being provided with yielding protuberances, and gearing for rotating said rollers reversely to the direction of rotation of the axle, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination,with a car, of a peaked platform at the end of the same, an inwardly and downwardly curved flange along the edges of said platform, two rollers mounted below the car-platform and each provided with a number of protuberances, and gearing for rotating said rollers, substantially as set forth.
