Description
m 7; WM
M 4 M m N 36 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TODD, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
SPIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,658, dated March 29, 1892.
Application filed May 5, 1891. Renewed March 2, 1892. Serial No. 423,548. (No model.)
kind of shear cutting edged and pointed spike shown in United States Patent No. 412,831, granted October 15,1889. In that patenta spike is shown provided with a plurality of points and a bevel channel or groove out upon one side of the spike and extending at its widest part between the points and forming two oppositely-inclined chisel cutting-edges. In manufacturing and using said spike under said patent I have found that it can be improved in shape, so as at once to facilitate its manufacture and make it better for practical 1 use. I form the cutting edge or edges and points by rolling, pressing, or otherwise, so as to make'one or more bevel channels or grooves on one or both sides of the spike. bevel, either by grinding, shearing, or pressing, the points, so as to make them sharp and at the same time form cutting-edges on the .outside, which is an advantage. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a sainple of a spike with achisel shear cutting-edge that I have succeeded in improving. Fig. 2 shows a front view of my improved spike.
I then f Fig. 3 is a side View, and Fig. 4. a back View, 35 of my spike. Fig. 5 shows myimproved spike with two shear cuttingedges.
My object is to secure all the advantages of a shear cutting edge or edges such as set forth in said patent and at the same time to secure the advantages of having the points formed perfectly and economically and edged on the outside of the spike.
Referring to the letters on the drawings, A indicates the body of the spike, B the head, and O the bevel, which may be upon either or both sides of the spike, so as to give it a shear cutting-edge. D indicates the four corner-bevels, which serve to point the spike and to give its points cutting-edges on the outside. I thus produce a spike having all the advantages of sharp points and shear cuttingedge, together with cutting-edges upon the outside of the points.
What I claim is A spike provided with a plurality of points and an oppositely inclined shear cuttingedge extending at its widest part between the points, which points are beveled at D to form cutting-edges on the outside of the spike, sub- 6o stantially as set forth.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN W. TODD.
