SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,459, dated March 22, 1892.

.To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, VICTOR MANUEL ARIZA, of Maracaibo, in the Republic of Venezuela, South America, have invented a new and Improved Ruler, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved ruler. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one end of the ruler, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation With the end of the ruler-casing removed.

The object of my invention is to provide a ruler for the use of draftsmen and others which Will avoid the blotting and soiling of the paper by any ink that may accidentally get on the ruler; also, to provide a ruler having a stop for indicating the length of the lines, and mechanism for spacing.

My invention consists in the combination, With a casing provided With an absorbent lining, of a roller fitted to the casing and arranged to touch the lining, pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for turning the roller, and a scale and adjustable arm for gaging the length of the lines, all as Will be hereinafter fully described. I In the semi-cylindrical casing A, provided with the ends a, is journaled a cylindrical roller B, of hard Wood or other suitable material, which is adapted to roll in contact With an absorbent lining b, attached to the inner To one end of the roller B is attached a ratchet-Wheel C, and upon the pivotal screw c of the roller is loosely mounted a lever d, to Which is pivoted a spring-pressed pawl e, adapted to engage the ratchet-Wheel C.

The top of the semi-cylindrical casing A is furnished With a bar D, having undercut edges and furnished on its upper surface With graduations, as shown. To the bar D is fitted an arm E, Which Curves downwardly over the roller B and is bent outwardly to serve as a stop for limiting the length of a line drawn along the roller B. The arm E is furnished With a set-screw f for clamping it in any desired position along the length of the bar D. The casing A is furnished With a handle F,

vby Which the ruler is moved along the surface to be ruled.

The ruler is moved over the paper in the direction required to cause the roller B to revolve toward the outer edge of the bar D, so that before the surface of the rolleris brought into contact With the paper any ink adhering thereto Will be removed by the absorbent lining b, thereby preventing the blotting of the paper by the ink carried by the roller.

VVhen it is desired to use the ruler in making spaced lines, the ruler is moved forward step by step by means of the paWl-and-ratchet mechanism already described.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A ruler formed of a roller of non-'absorbent material journaled in a casing enveloping a portion of its circumference, the said casing I V being provided With an absorbent lining attached thereto and cout-acting With the roller, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the roller B, the casing A, furnished with the absorbent lining b, the ratchet-Wheel C, attached to the roller, the lever d, mounted loosely on the pivot of the roller, and the spring-pressed pawl e, carried by the lever d, substantially as specified.

3. The combination of the casing A, f urnished with the graduated bar D, the arm E, fitted to the bar, and the roller B, journaled in the casing, substantially as specified.

4. The combination of the roller B, the casing A, provided With the handle F, and pawland-ratehet mechanism for turning the roller With a step-by-step motion, substantially as specified.
