Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
NATHANIEL '1). TYLER, OF JERICHO, KENTUCKY.
EARTH-AUGER,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,320, dated March '22, 1892.
Application filed September 9. 9 Serial No, 405.212- (No model.) Q
To all whom it may concern,-
' Be it known thatI, NATHANIEL D. TYLER, a citizen of the-United States, residing: at J ericho, in-- the county of Henryand State of Ken- I 5 tucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Earth- Angers; and I do hereby-declare the following to bea full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to 10 which it appertains to make andiuse the same.
This invention relates to angers, and par- 'ticularly' to-the class-of earth augers. I
v The object of the inventionis to provide an auger for boring post-holes with" removable :5, blades and to construct the point and stem separate from each other and from the blades, so that the blades can be secured between the said point and stem.
The invention consists in the novel con- 26 structionand arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is atop plan view with the handle removed; and Fig. 2 i's'a-section thereof, taken on the line a; in,
'25 Fig.1.
' The same-letters'of reference denote the sameparts throughout-the figures.
Thest'em A is provided in the usual man fuel? with a-handle at its upper end, and at its '30 lower endis formed 'in the same piece therewith 1arms C,projecting at' right anglesfrom the stemA and having 'bolt-holes a.
D} represents a pair of semicircular blades having one. half of their cutting edge b turned 35 in one direction and the other half 0 curved or turned. in the opposite direction, each plate or blade having two or more aperturesd.
" "The auger-point E has the usual lower screw portion, while upon its upper portion is formed in the same piece therewithri'ght- .the blades Dare in position to be secured between the arms 0 and the arms F register with the apertures '11 and the holes a, so as to receive the connecting-bolts f, which are provided with. suitable nuts G tohold the said parts firmly together. By thus constructing the auger-point T-shaped my one piece a' stronger and more durable part of the auger 'is-produced=-just where the greater-strain occurs. v v a Having thus described my invention, what I claim-as new, and desire to soon re by Letters Patent, is- 1 '1. In an earth-auger, the combination of the stem and the arms 0, constructed in one piece, and the point and thearms F, alsocontructed in one piece, with the blades D, having their cutting-edges curved in an opposite direction from each other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
' 2. In an earth-auger, the combination of the stemA, having right-angle arms, the
point E, also having right-angle arms,'with the blades D, and means for securing the-said parts together, substantially as shown and described. p Q
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two-witnesses.
NATHANIEL D. TYLER. Witnesses:
