LAMP AND SHADE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,286, dated March 22, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WALTER S. A'rwoon and HENRY H. ASHENDEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp and Shade Holders, of which the following is a specification.

Lamp -shade holders have hitherto been made of a ring capable of expansion or contraction, so thatthe lamp can be introduced from below and then grasped by closing the ring.

In the present improvements the ring is made expansible and can be closed by a toggle action, and the ring is provided Withsupports for the lamp-shade, in order that the shade may be permanently supported from the expansible ring whether it is open for the reception or removal of the lamp or whether it may be closed to hold such lamp.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the lamp-holding ring and a part of a shade. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial elevation with the parts of the toggle closed.

The ring A is made open and preferably slotted at 2 3 for the reception of the studs or rivets 4 5. These become guides to keep the parts parallel as the ring is expanded or contracted, and upon the pivot 4 we connect the ver is pivoted at 7 to the link 0, which link at its opposite end is pivoted at 8 to the ring near the opposite end thereof. Hence by turning the thumb-lever B in one direction the parts assume the position represented in Fig. l and the link Oand thumb-leverB slide the respective ends of the ring A, so as to open such ring or expand it to a sufficient size, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, for the lamp to be introduced from below up through the ring, and when the thumb-lever B is turned in the other direction and assumes the position represented in Fig. 3 the toggle action of the thumb-lever B and link 0 draws the end portions of the ring to lap them farther on each other and contract the ring and $erial No. 399,542. cause it to grasp the lamp after the latter has been inserted, and by this contraction we are enabled to open or close the ring with reliability, and the parts are strong and there is no risk of the ring springing open when in use and dropping the lamp.

Around the ring at about equal distances apart there are loops D, into which are introduced the lower ends of the shade-holding arms E, and these arms are of proper size and shape and spread more or less outwardly from the ring to receive the lamp-shade, which lamp-shade may be of porcelain or other material. We have shown part of a shade at F. These shade-holding arms E may be lifted out from the sockets or loops D when the lampholding ring is used without the shade.

The ring A is to be supported in any suitable manner. We have represented the bracket G as attached to one side of the expansible ring A, which bracket is received by a pivot or socket H, screwed in any suitable place, such as upon a door-frame or other article.

We claim as our invention-= Y 1. The combination, with an expansible ring, of a lever and link pivoted to the ring near the ends thereof and adapted to be turned for expanding or contracting the ring and a support connected with the ring, so that the lamp can be held or removed from position, substantially as set forth.

2. The expansible ring slotted near the ends and provided with guides, in combination with the thumb-lever pivoted near one end of the ring and a link pivoted to the thumb-lever and to the ring near the other end thereof for expanding or contracting such lamp-holding ring, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a bracket-arm, of an expansible ring fastened to the bracketarm and provided with guide-studs and a thumb-lever and link pivoted together and to the ring near the ends thereof, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, with the bracket, of an expansible ring connected with such bracket, and means for securing the ring when con= tracted around the lamp, and shade-holding arms extending up from the ring, substantially as specified.

5. The combination, in a lamp-support of an expansible ring, sockets upon such ring, shade-holding arms received into such sockets, and a lever and link pivoted together and to the expansible ring near the respective ends thereof for expanding or contracting such ring, substantially as set forth.
