To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES V. MCELHENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doylestown, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Copy- Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of the invention are to provide an extremely simple and economical device, for the most part constructed of wire, adapted to receive and retain the copy, indicate the line, and to stand upright on a printers oase, and adapted to be slid from side to side to uncover and permit access to certain boxes or to be inclined forwardly to give access to the upper case.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a copy-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the holder being tilted so as to expose and render accessible certain boxes of the case.'

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In practicing my invention I preferably construct the oblong base l of cast metal, and for the purpose of making the same light and saving metal form the base open, as shown. The front transverse rib of the base is provided upon its under side with an L.-shaped or rightangular recess 2, longitudinally disposed with relation to the rib, and at its front corners is provided with a pair of rearwardly-inclined perforated lugs or sockets 3", in which, as will hereinafter appear, is mounted the copy-holding frame now to be described. This frame is preferably formed of a single piece of wire and in the following manner: A blank of wire of suitable length is bent at each side of its center at a right angle to itself, forming a pair of terminals 3 and an intermediate connectcontinued to the top of the frame, forming the portion 5, and again rebent upon itself, as at 8, and terminates just above the shoulders. The shoulders thus formed give sufficient spring force to clamp between the bent portions 8 and 5 a copy, while the portions 5 and 8 combine to form a space, into which may be forced a line-indicator 10, and by means of which the line of copy upon which the copyist is engaged may be readily found.

If desired, a' frame 11, bent upon itself in the form shown,may be secured to or formed as a part of the wire frame just described. When secured to the frame, solder or other means may be employed for the purpose. When formed as a part of the frame, it is simply necessary to first form this frame 1l, and afterward the copy-frame, in the manner heretofore described. Vhen thus provided with the frame 1l, reprint may be conveniently held.

In operation, as shown in Fig. l, the longitudinal groove or recess in the under side of the base l receives the upper or rear corner or edge of the lower rail of the upper case, the remainder of the base l'resting upon the partitions forming the boxes and the front edge of the base abutting against the usual rib or bead of said rail. When thus mounted, it will be observed that the copy-frame may be slid from side to side, or, as shown in Fig. 3, tilted to the front against the bead and the upper or rear rail of the lower case, and be thus held in position while access is had to certain boxes in the upper case.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination, with the copy-holding frame, of a base having inclined sockets for the reception of the frame and provided at its front edge with an angular groove adapted to fit the corner of the lower side of a type-ease, substantially as speoiiied.

The combination, with a base,of a copyholding frame formed of a single piece of Wire bent at each side of the center to form an intermediate cross-bar and depending terminals rebent upon themselves to form tenons for entering sockets in the base, extended u p to the cross-bar to form copy-holding arms, and again rebent upon themselves and the copyliolding arms, with which it combines to form a space, and a line-indicator mounted for sliding in the space and adapted to receive a lineindicator, substantially as specified.

In a copy-holder, the combination, with the copy-holding frame, of the base for the saine, provided upon its under side with a groove adapted to tit over the edge of a type-oase and to slide along the same and also be tilted, the remaining portion of the base extending forward and fitting upon the boxes, substantially as specified.
