Be it known that I, OHAELEs J. LANGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters orAnalogous Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

' My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in casters or analogous articles; and it consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention,Eigure l is a plan view of a device embodying` my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the parts.

In said drawings, A indicates the base or body portion of the caster, provided with two or with four cups or receptacles A Av for the Various articles to be kept in the caster.

B B represent hinged or pivoted caps or covers for the several receptacles A A and C the handle.

As shown in the said drawings, a block D is centrally located upon the body portion of the caster, the same being, preferably, embedded in the material of which the said body portion is formed, said block being, preferably, provided with a downwardly-extending shank d, which is passed through the body portion of the caster and secured by means of a nut d', having a screw-threaded engagement with its lower end. The lids. or covers B B are pivotally supported upon said central block in any suitable manner-as, for instance, in the manner illustrated in the drawings,in which each of said covers is provided with a lateral ear b, which is pivotally supported between posts D D upon the upper surface of the block D, as shown at b in the drawings.

In the particular form of construction illustrated in the drawings, the block D is made of substantially rectangular form and is provided with four of the posts D', arranged one at each corner, and four of the lids or covers B B are provided, each of which is hinged or pivoted between two of the posts D at one side of the block D.

Upon the lower end of the handle C is'preferably provided a ball C', which has a bearing in a socket D2, centrally located in the block D, said ball C being provided with laterally-extending pins c c, each arranged to extend beneath the earb of one of the covers B and to engage with the under side of the same. Slots cl2 cl2 are provided in the block D, within which the pins cc are permitted to move vertically as the handle C is tilted or inclined toward one side or the other, the ball-and-socket connection between said handle and the block D obviously permitting the handle to be inclined toward either side of the caster at will. r

As illustrated more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, by a movement of the handle C to one side or the other, as indicated by the dotted lines, the pin c upon the side of the ball C', away from which the handle is inclined or tilted, will be raised upwardly within the groove or slot d2, in which it moves, while the pin c upon the opposite side of said ball will be correspondingly depressed.

The ear b of each one of the lids or covers B is curved or bent downwardly from the pivotal connection b with the posts D so as to normally rest in contact with one of the pins c, and this upward movement of said pin obviously serves to lift the cover C by reason of the engagement of the pin c with the. under side of the ear b and the consequent rocking of the same about the pivotal support b.

As shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, a l

slight oscillating movement of the handle C will produce a comparatively greater movement of the cover B, so as to afford an ample opening for filling the receptacle or for removing the contents thereof.

By the construction shown and described, the ears of the several covers B B normally resting upon the pins c c on the ball C at the lower end of the handle, an upward pull upon said handle will serve to raise the same slightly, so as to lift the ball C awayfrom its bearing in the block D, thereby causing all of the pins c c to engage with and bear upwardly against the under .surfaces of the ears b b on the several lids or covers B B, and

thereby operating to simultaneously lift all of said lids or covers and expose all of said receptacles A A. This is of advantage when it is desired to till the receptacles or to use from two or more of them at one time, as it' is only necessary to litt upwardly upon the handle C to open all of said receptacles.

Two of the receptacles may obviously be employed instead of four, it' desired, and the operation of the parts will be the same as in the before-described construction.

If desired, the receptacles may be made larger than is necessary for an ordinary-sized caster and adapted to contain larger articles, such as crackers and cheese, pop-corn, the.

It will be seen that my improved easter is exceedingly simple in its construction and operation, cheap to manufacture, and durable. I would have it understood, however, that I do not desire to limit myself to the exact form of construction illustrated in the drawings and herein described, as various modifications may be made in the details ot' constructionwithout departure from my original invention. 4

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States, is-

l. The herein-described caster, comprising a body portion provided with a plurality of receptacles having hinged or pivoted lids or covers, and a handle iiexibly engaged with said body portion and provided with extensions adapted to engage with the under sides of the said lids or covers outside ot their hinged or pivoted connections with said body, whereby each lid may be raised independently of the others, substantially as described.

The herein-described caster, comprising a body portion provided with a plurality of oppositely-disposed receptacles, lids or covers for said receptacles pivotally connected with the central part ci' said body portion between said receptacles, and a handle iiexiby engaged With said central part of the body portion and provided with lateral extensions adapted to engage with the under sides of the said lids or covers outside of their pivotal connections with said body portion, whereby each of said lids may be raised independently of the others, substantially as described.

3. The herein-described caster, comprising a body portion provided with a plurality of oppositely-dsposed receptacles, lids or covers for. said receptacles hinged or pivoted to the central part of said body portion between said lids or covers, and a handle having a balland-socket engagement with said central part of the bodyportion and provided with latererally-extending pins or arms adapted to engage with the under sides of the several lids outside of their pivotal connections with said body portion, whereby each lid may be raised independently of the others, substantially as described.

4. An improved caster comprising a body portion provided with a plurality ot' oppositely-disposed receptacles, a block cent-rally secured to said body portion between said receptacles, lids or covers pivotally secured to said block and arranged to cover the several receptacles, and a handle having a ball-andsocket engagement with said block. and arranged so as to have a vertical play in said. block, said handle being provided with laterally-extending pins or studs adapted to engage with the under surfaces of the lids or covers, whereby said lids or covers may be eitherindependently orsimultaneously raised, substantially as described.
