SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,859, dated March 15, 1892.

T0 at whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDGAR W. MERSEREAU, of Brooklymin the county of Kings and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sheet-metal boxes, and more especially to that class designated as round sheet-metal boxes.
It consists of an article of the above class which shall be made perfectly tight without the aid of solder; and it further consists of an improved means for securing the collar to the body portion of the box, so as to prevent the collar from turning thereon.
A practical embodiment of my invention is shown in .the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1.
Adesignates the body portion of the box, and its sides are folded together to form a seam B. The said seam projects inwardly, so as to form a substantially smooth exterior of the box.
C is the bottom, and is preferably secured to the body portion A by means of a downwardly-extending flange c and upwardly-extending flange c. Thelower edge of the body portion is inserted within the cylindrical socket formed by the flanges c c, and the flanges are then compressed tightly by a die or other suitable means. A screw-threaded collar D is secured to the body portion by first inserting it a short distance within the body portion and then indenting the two together, as shown at a. This is preferably done bv knurling the two together, as this forms a very tight and firm joint. Just above the edge of the body portion a cylindrical projection d is formed upon the collar. This is for the purpose of protecting the said edge and prevent it from being forced out of its depressed position. A cap E has an engagement with the collar D, preferably screw-threaded, as shown in the drawings.
To prevent the collar from turning upon the body portion, a part of said collar is compressed around the internally-projecting seam B, as shown at d. will be seen that the collar is firmly secured to the body portion and also prevented from turning independently thereof without the necessity of notching the collar and filling the hole thus formed with solder, as is ordinarily done. It will further be seen that when the outside of the box is enameled, as is frequently the case in this class of boxes, and solder has to be used the heat from the soldering process is liable to disfigure or deface the enamel, especially around where the solder is applied. The place thus liable to be disfigured is indicated by d on Fig. 2 of the drawings.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sheet-metal box, the combination, with the body portion the sides of which are fastened together to form an internally-projecting seam, of a screw-threaded collar secured to the body portion, a part of said collar being compressed around the said seam to prevent the collar from being turned independently of the body portion, substantially as described.
2. In a sheet-metal box, the combination, with a body portion the sides of which are secured together to form an internally-proj ecting seam, of a collar secured to the body portion by a circumferential depression in the two and said collar being compressed around the said seam upon the body portion to prevent it from turning thereon, substantially as described.
