UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERASTUS E. WVINKLEY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DRAFT-REGULATOR FOR LOCOMOTIVE-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 470,733, dated'Mareh 15, 1892. Application filed December 15, 1890. Serial No. 374,847. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERASTUS E. WINKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usef ul Draft-Regulator for Locomotive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-regulators for above purposes, in which, by means of a port and gate controlled from the cab, air may be admitted into the smokechamber of the locomotive to regulate the effect upon the draft of the discharge of the exhaust-steam through the smoke-stack.
The object of my invention is to provide a' simple device that may be attached to forms of locomotives in common use, by means of which the draft can be controlled from the cab and the waste'of fuel and clogging of flues of boiler caused by too heavy draft, as when the heavy exhaust passes through the smoke-stack in starting from stations, maybe prevented.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boiler and adjacent parts of locomotive-engine, showing my invention applied to same, with section broken out to show interior of smoke-chamber and arrangement of my invention therein. Fig. 2isalongitudinal vertical section through center of smoke-chamber, including ends of boiler-fines, and further illustrating arrangement of my invention in said chamber. Fig.
3 is a section through a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached view of device for admission of air into smoke-chamber.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the chamber in front of fines of the boiler, through which the draft passes to smoke-stack, commonly called the smoke-chamber, the form shown being that commonly used in American engines, and being selected merely as convenient illustration, it forming no part of my invention.
B represents smoke-stack of ordinary form, connected with smoke-chamber in usual way.
0 represents device in common use for discharging exhaust into smoke-stack, commonly called blast-pipes.
Into the smoke-chamber A, I open port (I. Then by formingconneotion between same and external atmosphere the port 01 is adapted to be closed by the sliding gate e, working airtight in the box f and operated from the cab of the locomotive bya leverland connectingrod r. I find it convenient for purposes hereinafter set forth to have port (2 open intoa pipe p, leading through chamber A to a point immediately under smoke-stack B.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: When the draft through flues is greater than necessary, as when a heavy exhaust is discharging through smoke-stack by means of the lever Z and the connecting-rod r, the gate 6 may be wholly or partially opened and a current of air allowed to enter the chamber A. Air so admitted will tend-to fill the par- -tial vacuum caused in chamber A by the passage of steam through smoke-stack B. The eifort to fill such partial vacuum by air passing through fines will be diminished, or, in other words, draft will be checked. If air is allowed to enter chamber A directly after passing through port cl, I find that its elfect upon the draft through fines is irregular, depending to some extent on the direction which the current of air takes upon entering said chamber. To remedy this, I find it convenient to connect the pipe 10 with the port d, so that air entering said port will be carried by said pipe to a point directly under the smoke-stack B and there discharged in the direction of draft through said smoke-stack. I
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A draft-regulator for locomotive-engines, consisting of a device for the admission of air to the chamber in front of flues of the boiler,
through which the draft passes to the smokestack, and a device for controlling said admission from the cab of the locomotive, in combination with a device for discharging the exhaust-steam through the smoke-stack, all substantially as set forth, and for the purposes specified.
2. A draft-regulatorforlocomotive-engines, consisting of a port connecting the chamber in front of fines of the boiler, through which draft passes to smoke-stack with the external atmosphere, a device for opening and closing said port from the cab of the locomotive, and
external atmosphere, the sliding gate 6, working air-tight in box f and adapted to close the port (Z, the connecting-rod 'r and lever 1, adapted to operate gate e from cab of locomotive, and the pipe p, adapted to conduct current of air entering portal toa point under the SillOkG'SilZ'LCk and discharge it in direction of draft through same, all substantially as set 20 forth, and for purposes specified.
