BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forlfnng` part of Letters Patent No. 470,652, dated March 15, 1892.
Application filed April 25,1891.
To all whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS BAL- LARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Brit-ain, residing in the city of Hamilton, in the county 5 of Wentworth andProvince of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, (for which I have not obtained a patent in any con ntry,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buckles or fastenin gs for holdback-straps for bu ggies and other vehicles and for other purposes where from the unhitching or undoing of other fastenings, whether accidental or otherwise, it may I5 become desirable to have a buckle that will automatically disengage itself .from its strap.
I attain this object by a buckle illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a plan or top view of the buckle. 2o Fig. 2 is a bottom view to show the manner in which the tongue is inserted. Fig. 3 is a section on line x of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a section online y y of Fig. l.

The frame A of the buckle is of the usual kind. The fastener B, by Which it is held to the shaft or other object, has a slot b on the under side, as shown in Fig. 3, to receive the Serial No. 390|482. (No model.)
frame A, and in which it is pivoted when the fastener B is lixed upon the shaft. The fastener B has another slot b forward of the slot b', which slot b is intended to carry the pivots c c of the tongue C, so that when the fastener B is fixed to the shaft the tongue O z5 will be pivoted therein.
It will be seen that the tongue C is not pivoted concentrically with the frame A, as is usual with buckles, but eccentrically. Consequently when the Whiffletrees or the traces are unhitched and a change in the direction of the draft occurs, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3,the tongue O draws Wit-hin the frame A, so that the frame A becomes automatically unhitched.
What I claim my as invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle consisting of the frame A, fastener B, and tongue O, the frame A pivoted in a slot b in the fastener B, and the tongue O, by its pivots c c, pivoted in another slot b in rsaid fastener B, all as hereinbefore described, as and for the purposes hereinbofore set forth.
