Description

NITEDV ST TES JOHN GEORGE WVUOHERER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
MACHINE FO R SHARPENING SLATE-=PENCILS.
SPEG IFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,615, dated March 8, 1892.
Application filed May 19, 1891. Serial No. 393,371, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GEORGE WVUCH- ERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sharpening Slate-Pencils; and I do hereby declare that the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description of my improvements, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which they appertain to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to furnish a new and efficient device for sharpening slatepencils which is especially adaptedtfor the use of schools.
The machine consists of adrum or cylinder constructed with circumferential grooves covered with emery or other suitable gritty substance and provided with a crank for rotating it.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, .1 will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and then more particularly pointoutin the claims what I deem as new therein.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3is alongitudinalsectional View taken on the line F F of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4. is a transverse sectional view taken on the line E E of Fig. 1.
A is a revoluble drum of hard word formed with a series of circumferential grooves a in its periphery, over which a coating of emerydust is to be applied.
A is a gudgeonor axle passing through the drum A and supported in suitable bearings a in the standards B. This axle is squared in its center, so the drum A will rotate with it, and is rounded at its ends to provide suitable bearing-surfaces. The standards Bare formed with upper circular portions b, in the centers of which are secured the bearings a and lower supporting legs or feet I), which are attached to the base-plate O. The circular portions (9 form shields, between which the grooved drum revolves;
D is a crank keyed to the outer end of the axle A, by means of which the drum Ais revolved. a
P is a pan of any suitable shape placed upon the base-plate 0 between the standards to catch the dust from the pencils.
The emeryis applied to the grooved surface of the drum A in any suitable manner, preferably by applying a prepared glue to the surface and sifting the emery-dust onto the sticky surface until it is completely covered.
The machine is to be operated by turning the crank with the right hand and revolving the drum and holding the pencil to be sharpened in one of the emery-coated grooves with the left hand.
By this machine a cheaper and more efficient means for sharpening slate-pencils is provided.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of the emery coated drum A, mounted upon the axle A between the standards B, said standards being formed into shields h, as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the emery-coated drum A,the axle A, and the standards B, said standards being provided with the shield portions 1) and the feet 5, as herein set forth.
3. A slate-pencil sharpener consisting of a pair of standards formed with circular heads or cheekplates, the shaft journaled in the heads or cheek-plates, a roll or cylinder mounted on the shaft between the heads or cheek-plates, a circumferential groove in said cylinder, a gritty lining to the groove, and means for operating the shaft, substantially as described and shown.
JOHN GEORGE WUCHERER.
