DISH-WASHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,532, dated March 8, 1892. Application filed May 1,;1891. Serial No. 391,272. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERASMUS W. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seneca, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dish-\Vashers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.

The objects are to construct an improved dish-water for the purpose of washing dishes without having to put the hands in the water, and to do the work quickly and thoroughly and neatly; furthermore, to produce a washer so simple and cheap that it may be manufactured in any village, and so simple and easy of operation that a child can use it, and so compact as to require but little room.

\Vith these objects in view my invention may be briefly stated to be a tub-shaped vessel having a conformable vessel placed in it, and is provided with a suitable cover and oscillated, as hereinafter more fully described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, on which the letters conform to this specification.

A designates the wash-tub, and is of either wood or metal, and is provided with handles Z) I) and cover D,which is provided with suitable springs attached theretoand bar (1 and inside tub B. When the tub A is made of metal, it can be placed over the fire to heat the water and kept there as long as required.

The inside tub B is a conforming-vessel and is the receptacle for the dishes, and is provided with a perforated bottom to act as a strainer, with suitable handles 0 c and a partition O, which divides tub B into two about equally-sized spaces, into which the dishes are put While being Washed or rinsed. The partition 0 also forms a break in the current caused by oscillating the washer and dashes the water upon the dishes with great violence.

D is a suitable cover, of either wood or metal, with bar d attached on its outer surface, which serves as a cleat for the same, as well as a means of fastening for the cover, which is provided also with spiral conoidic shaped springs E, which are made to conform to the spaces each side of partition 0 in vessel B. These springs hold the dishes in a firm position to prevent their being broken while the washer is being rotated.

E F F are staples to fasten springs E to the cover when it is made of wood.

G is an oscillating f rameor table upon which the washer rests while being operated, and is provided with a pivot H near its center, and also with long books or loops 6, which are hooked over the projecting ends of cleat or bar (Z, thereby holding the cover D on firmly and keeping the tub in place while being rotated. The pivot H has its bearing in a metallic bushing J, which is placed in a convenient frame, table, or block, so as to be most convenient for the operator.

To use the dish-washer, the vessel A should be partially filled with water and the dishes packed in theinner vessel and secured by the hooks g catching on the cleat d, and by this means the springs E are forced down on the dishes, and thus thelatter are securely heldin position. The operator then takes hold of the cleat and gives the washer an oscillating motion, which creates a great agitation of the water inside and thoroughly cleanses the dishes contained therein. After the motion has been continued long enough the cover is removed and the inner vessel or strainer removed, leaving the water behind in the vessel A,which can now be put on the fire to warm the water for a second set of dishes while the dishes in the vessel A are being removed. Any other suitable mode of operating the washer may be adopted at the will of the operator.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a dish-washer, the combination, with the tub A, of the cover D, spiral springs E, an inside conformingtub B, having partition C, handles 0 c, bard, oscillating frame or table G, and hooks connecting the frame and bar, substantially as described.
