DUST-COLLECTOR. l
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters 'iatent No. 470,524, dated IMarch 8, 1892. l
'Y Application filed April 2B, 1888.
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD E. WARD- HAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, county of Morgan, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dust-Collectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention contemplates certain improvements in dust-collectors, having for its object to separate dust from air in an expeditious and thorough manner; andit consists of amr-approximately funnel-shaped receptacle, within which is disposed a shaft driven by a wind-wheel through the current of air set up by the exhaust, said shaft carrying brushes adapted to remove the dust from the inside of the receptacle into a conveyer below, and also carrying beaters and a saucer, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved dustcollector. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the reversible saucer with its corrugated surface upward.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ a funnel-shaped receptacle A, suitably disposed to receive the dust. This receptacle or funnel is provided at its lower convergent end with an outwardly and downwardly ared or enlarged chamber A', its upper converging end uniting with said converging end of the receptacle or funnel and its lower flared end preferably having a marginal flange a.
B is an upright shaft disposed centrally in the funnel or receptacle A, and provided with a Wind-wheel b, arranged in the purified-air discharge of the funnel or receptacle, and which is driven by the exhaust or centrifugal force of the current of air as it is discharged from the machine. its lower end in a bearing or thumb-screw C, which is supported in a screw-threaded plate c, held in one arm of a right-angled bracket d, depending from the funnel or receptacle A;
or it (the screw C) may work directly in the bracket. The shaft B carries a brush D,
which ranges with and removes the adhering dust from the inner converging sides of the This shaft is stepped at4 Serial No. 272,206.` (No model.)
funnel or receptacle A into the lower chamber A', the dust then falling or lodging in the Upon the shaft B, within the chamber A,"`
are secured a number of beaters or agitators F, which effect the discharge or delivery of the deposited dust from the saucer E.
The saucer E, which prevents indrafts to the lower or bottom end of the funnell or receptacle A'which would interfere with the outflowing dust, is adapted to permit of the passage through it of the shaft, and is corrugated upon one side and smooth upon the other side. The saucer is also reversible to permit of using either side upward. Being removably held upon the shaft B, it may be by nuts e screwed upon the shaft, one above and one below the saucer, or by means of shoulders upon the shaft. The corrugated side of the saucer is disposed upward to carry off, for instance, sawdust, dac., when the invention is used in wheat-machines, planingmills, dac., the smooth side being placed upward in carrying off dust, &c.
To the upper part of the shaft B, within purified-air-outlet passage f of the funnel or receptacle A, is applied or secured a horizontal or transverse rod or. bar G, upon which are carried two brushes I-I I-I to remove or clean the adhering dust from the walls of the outlet-passage f. These brushes are secured to sleeves or tubes g, which are fitted and held upon the rod G by means of holding or thumb screws h. 4
It will be seen that by suitably manipulating the thumb-screw or bearing C, the shaft B, together with the saucer, beaters, and brush B, can all, simultaneously and at. one operation, be adjusted as may be required, while by means of the sleeve and thumb screw connection between therod G and brushes H the latter can also be readily adjusted as occasion may require.
It will be understood that I herein make no claim to any features forming the subjectmatter of the claims contained in my application filed July 19, 1887, Serial No. 244,789.
IOO
I do not claim the combination, with thel tapering separating-'chamber provided with van inlet for the dust-laden air, an outlet for l plied to the smal-lend of the separating-chamber and surrounding the opening in the apex thereof, nor the combination, with the tapering separating-chamber provided with an inlet for the dust-laden air, an outlet for' the j funnel having the enlarged lower end and the central shaft, of the reversible saucer smooth purified air, and a dust-discharge opening at its apex, of an enlarged dust-conduit surroundingthe dust-discharge openingand separated therefrom by an annular shoulder surrounding the dust-discharge opening.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with thefunnel or re'- ceptacle and the shaft, of. the saucer applied.
to said shaft andreversible'sidefor sidfe'fsub'- stantially as set forth. Y
2'. The combination, with the funnel orneceptacle and' the Wind-wheel shafty ad-justa'bly supportedy in place, of they saucer,.beaters, and brush, all applied to'y andadj'ustable by means of said shaft, substantially as set forth.
- 3f. The combination7 with the funnel-'or receptacle and a lower outwardly and downwardly ared chamber,i of the shaft carrying 4. The combination, with the funnel or receptacle and a lower outwardly and downwardly lflared chamber, of the shaft carrying agitators or beaters arranged in said cham-ber and the saucer disposed upon saidv shaft just below the said chamber, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the receptacle or I on one sid-e and corrugated on the other side,
substantially as specified.
6'. The combination, with the' funnel or receptacle and the Wind-wheel, of the shaft oarrying a brush orb'rush'es arrangedin-theroutlet-passage. of said funnel or receptacle:
'7.- Th'e' combi-nation, with the funnel orV receptacle and the` Wind-wheel. shaft, of. lther brushes. having. applied; thereto'- sleeves or tubes provided. with thumbor'holdingscrews and a cross bar or rod. applied to said shaft and tting in said tubes or sleeves, substantially as set forth.
