RALPH DRABBLE, OF LONSDALE, RHODE ISLAND.
NOSING-MOTIQN FOR SELF-ACTING MULES.
SPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,479, dated March 8, 1892. Application filed July 20, 1891- Serial No. 400,148. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RALPH DRABBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lonsdale, in the countyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nosing-Motions for Self-Acting Mules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved automatic mechanism for deflecting the winding chain to increase the velocity of the winding movementof the spindles, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a detail side view showing the quadrant-arm in its extreme elevated position. Fig. 2 represents the same side view with the quadrant-arm in its lower position, with the nose-peg in engagement with the chain. Fig. 3 represents the same side View showing the quadrant-arm inan intermediate position, with the stud at the end of the arm upon the taller-shaft in engagement with the pivoted engaging arm of the nosingmotion. Fig. 4 represents a detail top View of the nosing-motion.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the quadrant-arm, to the upper end of which is attached the bracket B, and to the side of the said bracket at the point a is pivoted the nose-peg lever 0, having at its forward end the nose-peg D, which at the downward movement of the quadrant-arm A en- To the side of the bracket B is also pivoted the dog F,
which engages with the serrated edge I) of the nose-peg lever O and serves to hold the said lever in its adjusted position, the forward end of the lever 0 being actuated in an upward direction against the point of the dog F by means of the spring G, which is connected with theheel of thelever Oat the point e. To the side of the downwardly-extendin g arm f of the bracket Bis pivoted the engaging arm H, from the end of which jointed connection is made to the lever C by means of the link I, so that a downward pivotal movement imparted to the engaging arm H will be also imparted to the nose-peg lever 0.
Upon the taller-shaft J is attached the backfirst wound upon the cop g to its full diameter,
and thereafter the continued engagement of the stud L of the arm K at each forward movement of the carriage N will, upon the gradually-increasing elevation of the winding position of the faller Pand consequent decrease in the elevation of the arm K and stud L, cause the gradual drawing down of the nose-peg D to an increasing degree of engagement with the winding-chain E, the action of the stud L of the arm K upon the back of the engaging arm H' being such as to cause the nosepeg lever to be'slightly depressed at proper intervals, inwhich depressed position it is held by the dog F, the latter, during the downward movement of the nose-peg lever, having slid backward over one of the notches in the said lever, thus serving to move thewiudingchain B more and more from a straight line, whereby an additional length of chain will be uncoiled from the winding on drum M, with a consequent increase in the velocity of the spindles for Winding the thread upon the cop.
I claim as my invention l. 'lhe combination, with the quadrant-arm, the notched nose-peg lever, and the dog for holding the nose-peg lever in its adjusted position, of the pivoted engaging arm connected with the nose-peg lever, whereby upon the pivotal movement of the said arm the nosepeg lever will also be turned upon its pivot, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the quad rant-arm, the notched nose-peg lever, the dog, and the pivoted engaging lever connected with the nose-peg lever, of the faller, the fallershaft, the engaging arm upon the faller-shaft, the carriage, the Winding-drum, and the chain, substantially as described.
RALPH DRABBLE.
