INDEX-BOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,380, dated March 8, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEROY HILL, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in index-books; and the object'of the improvements is to provide a book wherein may be registered or recorded any matters or items which shall be classified according to their due or maturing dates, this book being provided with corresponding indexes for referring directly to such pages, dates, or lines.

The invention will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

- In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the book open, with onepage of the alphabetical portion turned. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the book, showing the first pages of the months and daily-register index portion turned.

The common alphabetical index portion of the book, which is first in order, consists of leaves so cut away from top to bottom of leaf at edge, as shown at 10, as to leave the pages about one-half inch narrower than the re ister portion, the object being to leave the index of the register portion at all times exposed to view, so as to show the months and days in proper order and arrangement as soon as the book is opened, whether the leaves of the alphabetic portion are turned or not. The pages of this portion of the book are cut away so as to expose all the letters'of the index from A to Z, in the usual manner, and are provided with vertical columns intersected by horizontal lines for recording names, pages, and numbers referring to names, pages,

tom of the righthand side of the register portion of the book, the leaves being cut away diagonally or so as to form oblique angles with the books vertical edge, showing the name of every month of the year at a single view or eX- posure of the book, as shown at 15 in the drawin gs. The names of the months commence somewhat below the middle of the right-hand side with J anuary and terminate at or near the bottom with December and Miscellan eous entries. The days of the months are marked on the same right-hand side or margin, but above the months names, commencing at 1, the first day of the month, near the middle of the right-hand side of the book, and increasing toward the top of the book, the last day of any month being shown at the top always, the leaves being cut away diagonally, as shown at 20, the reverse of the diagonal cuttings for the names of the months. By

making these cuttings diagonal the leaves are much easier turned as desired. Each cutting for each succeeding day of the month is out about a quarter of an inch nearer the top, so as to expose all the figures representing the days of that month. Each series of cuttings and numbering for the days of each month commence always about or somewhat below the middle of the right-hand margin. of the book and continue upward until the last day is reached at the top. Each succeeding months pages are cut away just below the name of the month, so that in putting the thumb of the right hand on the name of any month wanted the book will open to the first of that month and at once show the days of that month from the first to the last, and by putting the thumb on any day wanted the book Will-open to that day of the month for any year, as shown by the printed strip of paper, muslin, leather, &c., attached to the cutting for that page. Each page has vertical columns, (designated in the drawings,) from two to any number, for different years, the index-cuttings showing the months and days and the vertical ruling showing the year of maturity for any day of any month. Each page has also horizontal record-lines of any requirednumber about one-fourtl1 to one-half inch apart, numbered from l at the first line at top to the last line at bottom of book, as shown at 25. In the register part of the book only one page is shown by Fig. 2 for each day of each month and two pages for each first day of each month, the plan being that more space be allowed for such first days, as more items mature on the first days of months. do not restrict my application, however, to any certain or limited space for any day of any month, the idea being to adapt the space to the need of the business, using either one or more pages for each day and two or more for all first days.

The uses of the book are various, being de-.

signed for any business where month, day, and yearare a conslderation. It will be found specially valuable, however, for use as an attorneys court-docket, insurance-register of number of that page and theline-number on which it is recorded. turns to the alphabetical index-and registers the corresponding name, page, and line, thus making a complete record convenient for any time. During each morning of the yearthe manager of any businessconcern can refer to the page or pages for that day of that month and at a glance see what obligations (to themselves or others) mature on that date, since hesees before him a record and description of thesame, making it impossible to overlook any portion of each days commercial work. The book is designed always to take the place of two ordinary books: first, a register for recording-anything maturing on any date, giving a complete recordand an alphabetical index, whereby the exact line of the entry may be instantly referred to, and, second, to take the place of a notification-tickler, since everything is recorded with reference to itsmaturity date. It is designed to be used for any number of years until the book is full. It can be commenced at any The accountant then time during any year, each day and page having a special column for each year under the Year due heading. The register commences at page l with Januaryl of any year and closes with December 31 and an extra number of pages following December 31 for miscellaneous entries. The pages may be of any number desired. All entries, names of months, and figures representing days of months are attached to the leaves by printed strips of paper, canvas, or leather and extend only to side, edge, or cuttings of leaves and do not project, on which are shown the alphabetical index, the index to names of months, or index to days of months. There are no names of week-days in the book, and all dates appear von right and left handtmargins, names of month and day notbeing printed on. leaves, but shown only by theindex. the daily-index cutting in another direction (upward) and these cuttings diagonally the arrangement for reference is the easiest and quickest possible.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim isl. A record-book having the right-hand mare gin of the leaves printed or labeled with the names of themonths and daysof the months and these leaves so'cut awayas to. expose at. a glance the names ofall the months and the,

numerals or names of all days ofalsingle month, the'names of the month being indi-. cated on the lower half ofthe margin, begin-- ning with January, whichis uppermost, and thedays of each month indicated, on. the up.- per half of themargin, the name ornumeral of the last day being uppermost, substantially the margin, beginning with J anuary, which is uppermost, and the days of each-month on the upper half of the margin,.thename of the.

last day of .themonth being .uppermost, the leaves of the-book-beingcut awaysoasto expose simultaneously the. names of. all the months and'the names or thenumerals'of all the days of a singlemonth, substantially as described.

margin, beginning with January, which is uppermost, and thenames or numerals ofthe days of the months upon the upper half of the margin, the names of the last days of the months beinguppermost on the several sections, the margin of the book being cut away diagonally, exposing the names of all the months and the days of a single month simultaneously, substantially as described.

4. A record-book consisting of sections corresponding with the months of the year, the sections being labeled or printed on the lower half of the right-hand margin of the book with the names of the months or those names suitably abreviated, Jan. being placed uppermost, and the names of the other months in their order downward, the margin of the book being cut away to expose the names of all the months, the days of the month being designated on the upper half of the right-hand margin of each section, substantially as described. y

5. A record-book composed of sections corresponding with the months of the year, the lower half of the right-hand margin of the sections being marked to indicate the months of the year, the designation for January being placed highest on the list and the other months in their order downward, the margin of the book being cut away to show the names of all-the months at a glance, the daysof the month being suitably indicated on the upper right-hand margin of the sections, substantially as described. a

6. A record-book having an alphabetical or name-index in front and a monthly or date index in the rear formed upon the right-hand margin of the leaves, which are so cut away as to expose the names of all the months at a glance, the right-hand margin of the leaves of the name-index being cut away or narrower than the rest of the book to expose the date-index when the name-index is not turned, substantially asdescribed.

7. A record-book having the names of the months and the days of the months indicated on the right-hand margin of the leaves, the names of the months being indicated on the lower portion of the margin, beginning with January, which is uppermost, and the days of the months on the upper portion of the margin ending with the last day, which is nearest the top of the margin of the book, being cut away to expose the names of all the months at a glance, the leaves of the book being ruled to form vertical columns, which are provided with headings indicating the years, and horizontal lines intersecting these columns and numbered consecutively from the top to the bottom of the book, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
