SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,223, dated March 8, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. TREMBLE, a citizen of. the United States, residing at WVhitewood, in the county of Lawrence, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bill-files designed more particularly for prescription-files for druggists use; and it has for its objects among others to provide an improved file for this purpose which shall be simple, cheap, and efficient in use, not liable to get out of order, and which may be manipulated with ease. I provide a base-piece to which is affixed a punch and a box or apartment for holding the prescriptions after they are on file, and holding-wires, one of which is movable, being attached to a spring-plate, one end of which is extended to form ameans for operating the movable wire. The punch is conveniently located so that the prescription may be readily punched and then slipped over the wire and laid in its compartment right-side up, so that it can be read without removing it from the wire.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same with the wires broken off.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a suitable basepiece which may be of any desired shape or size and designed to be arranged or secured in any suitable or desired position, it being the intention, when used for prescriptions, to secure it to the prescription-connteras, for instance, bya screw a or other means. At one corner of the base upon its upper face I affix the angular piece 5, forming a compartment in which the prescriptions or a portion thereof may be held, as shown in Fig. 1.

B is a punch secured to the upper face of the base, preferably at the right-hand side thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, and which punch may be of any of the well-known or preferred forms of construction adapted to punch a hole in the paper by pressure upon the upper end of the spindle thereof, a space a being formed between the upper face of thebase and the projecting piece d of the punch-support, as shown in Fig. 1.

D is a metallic spring-strip held at its inner end to the base-piece in any suitablemanner and carrying at its inner end the wire E, which is curved forward at its upper end, which end is preferably sharpened to facili tate the placing of the papers thereon. This spring-plate is located in a central longitudinal recess or groove e in the base-piece, which groove or recess at its rear end terminates in a rounded wall, as shown at f in Fig. 2, over which the spring-plate may be bent, as will be understood from Fig. 2. The end of the plate is extended, and the extended end may be bent or turned slightly downward, as seen in both views, to form a handle or thumbpiece. F is the movable wire secured in any suitable manner at its lower end to the said spring-plate, its upper end being curved rearward, as seen in Fig. 1, and adapted to engage the end of the fixed Wire. The engaging ends may be arranged to hold each other by a depression in the one to engage the sharpened end of the other, if desired, or they may abut against each other.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.

What I claim as new is 1. A bill-file having a fixed wire and a movable wire, combined with a spring-plate fixedly held at one end and carrying the movable wire, as set forth.

2. A bill-file consisting of a base-piece, a fixed wire, a spring-plate fixedly held to the base at one end and capable of movement at the other end, and a wire carried by the said plate, substantially as specified.

3. A bill-file consisting of a base-piece, a fixed Wire, a spring-plate fixedly held at one end to the base-piece and Working vertically in a longitudinal groove therein, and a Wire carried by the said plate, substantially as specified.

4:. A bill-file consisting of a base-piece having an angular piece at one corner, a fixed wire, a spring-plate carrying the other Wire, and a punch secured to the base-piece, substantially as specified.
