Be it known that l, .I oHN A. HOPKINS, e cil izen ofthe United Stntes residing at Murray, in the county of Hocking and Stnte -of Ohio, have invented e certain 'new and useful Improvement in Rope-(filing,r Devices, of which the following is e specification. Y

Secured to the inner sides oi' the boyframo at opposite points and in the roer half thereof are the lower end portions of two vertical and parallel standards c, which rise above tho box, as shown. Between the upper ends of these 'llio box thus formed is provided near stunden-dsc is fulcrumed upon n pin c5 the rear en d ot' 'a lever-bar c', which, extending forwardly, is provided with a handle-shaped termination c2. Adjacent to this handle-piece c2 the lever-bar c' is supported upon o suitable vpin c3 between two forward standards c4, which extend upwardly at opposite points from the inner sides of the forward portionof the box and which are provided with two or more oppositely-located pin-holes d, through which the pin c3 may be inserted to admit of the lever c being s'ecured at dilerent heights. At or near the center of the length ofthe lever-ber c are secured the upper ends of two downwardly-extending parallel arms e, which normally project within the central portion of the box a below the center of the height thereof. Between the lower ends of these arms e is ,ionrnaled upon a. suitable short cross-shaft e e sheave or pulley-,wheel e.
'Joux-nailed' between the said frame-pieces b neer each end of the box is a sheave or pulleywheel f, which, as shown in the drawings, extends partlywithin nndpertly without the box end. Rising from the upper side of the box at. opposite points nre pins k, said pins being preferably located at points opposite the rear shczwef. Each of these pins is fnlcrumed or pivoted to the forward end of a rearwardly-extending lever-arm k', the outer end oiwhich projects beyond the remend of the box, ns shown', and which are normally drawn toward each other by suitable connecting links or cords les. Each of these arms k has aftixed to its inner side the central portion of n wipingblock lf2, the inner side of which is provided with e horizontal rope groove or channel ,7e-5.
In practice the box is filled-or partially filled with :L suitable oilingmixture, which preferably consists of pine :ind coal tor, together with n snmll proportion of lime, but which may be otherwise produced. Support-ed in this position the rope is pulled in the direction of the arrows, and in so doing,r passes over the sheaves f and under the sheave e2. In this manner a coating of the mixture contained in the box is impart-ed to the rope, and the rope passes through the grooves kf* of the blocks la? the surplus oil or tar upon the rope is by contaet'with said blocks scraped or wiped therefrom and allowed to drop backn the box. In this mnuner a uniform coating of oil or tar isimparted to the rope throughout its length and but a Small proportion of the mixture is Wasted. From the consti-notion shown and described itwill be seen thztt a simple, substantial, and effective device nin-y be produced by means of which hoisting or other ropes may be quickly provided with a uniform coating of oil or other liquid mixture.
