SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,974, dated March 1, 1892. Application filed October 7, 1891. Serial No. 408,008. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM MUNDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of-New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Spool-Holder and Stop-Motion for Braiding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved combined spool-holder and stop-motion device for that class of'braidingmachines known as the Hercules Braiding- Machines, and in which a series of fixed spool-holders are provided, around which movable spool-holders travel in serpentine slots.
The invention consists in the combination,
with a movable spool-holder, of a winged hub mounted to move vertically on the spoolholder, means for holding said winged hub adapted to trip and turn said hub to permit it to drop, a ring on the frame-plate of the braiding-machine, "which ring is provided with pins on which the lugs of the hub can act,
and a stopping and starting gear operated from said ring.
The invent-ion also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details,

The top plate A of the braiding-machine is in which the fixed spool-holders are fastened, said apertures A being surrounded by the serpentine slot or track A A ring A is arranged along the edge of the circular baseplate A, and is suitably guided by lugs 13', and is provided on its inner surface with a series of pins B and with a cam-plate (J. A handle 0' projects from the outer surface of said ring, and is to be used for shifting the same. A lever D is pivoted on the standard D on the base plate A of the machine, and is provided at one end with a fork D embracing a collar E of the vertically-movable member of clutch E on the driving-shaft E, which clutch when raised throws the machineout of gear with the driving-shaft and when lowered throws it in gear. A spring D secured to the base-plate A presses the forked end of the lever D upward, and thus has a tendency to press the other enddownward, which other end is provided with an upwardly-projecting rod F, provided at its upper end with a laterally-projecting pin F, that is adapted to rest upon the top edge of the camplate'O. All these parts are old and well known, and are used in the braiding-machines.
The traveling spool-holders consist of the angular spindle G, on which the angular sleeve G is mounted to slide, said sleeve being pressed upward by the helical spring G ,surrounding the spindle and arranged between the lower end of the sleeve G and the basepiece G of said spindle, which base-piece is flanged and travels in the slots A in the usual manner.
At the upper end of the sleeve Gthe hub H is mounted on the spindle and is provided with two laterally-projecting beveled lugs H, each having a pin H on its upper surface, said hub being provided with a circular recess I, projecting down to about one-half the depth of the same, and in the bottom of said recess an aperture 1' is formed in the hub, which provided with a circular row of. apertures A,
aperture 1 has the same cross-section as the sleeve G ,but is made larger to adapt the upper end of said sleeve to pass into the same. The spool J rests upon the adjustable collar K, being provided with a neck K, projecting from its under side and into the circular recess I of the hub H.
The movable spool-holder-is provided :With the usual thread-guide and tension device that are old and well known and need not be described here.
The fixed spool-holder consists of a standard L, provided with two brackets L', in which the spindle M is mounted5thatpasses through the spool O. The operation is as follows: When the na-V chine is in operation, the clutch is lowered and the pin F of the rod F rests upon thetop .edge of the cam-piece C and thehnoyable spool-holders travel in the serpentinetracks or slots A around the fixed" spool-holders. The hub H is in araised position andrrests upon the upper edge of thesleeyeG, said hub standing at an angle of ninety degrees to the sleeve G'that is to say, each diago-. nal axis of the hub H is at right angles to the corresponding diagonal axisof the sleeve G'.
The pins H on the upper end of theihub bear against the under side of the-collar K, the neck K of which is within the circular recess I of the hub. In case a thread ona fixed spool breaks, the corresponding plateN drops until it rests upon the bottom bracket L, and:
