SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,970, dated March 1, 1892. Application filed p 1891- Serial No. 405,437- (No model.) Patented in Switzerland February 14, 1891, No. 3,282.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUsrAvE MARTINET, professor, of Lausanne, Switzerland, have invented an Improved Churn, (for which Letters Patent have been granted in Switzerland, No. 3,282, dated February 14:, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention consists of an improved churn, the construction of which is such as to allow the inside of the churn to be easily cleaned after each operation.

Myimproved churn is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 2 avert-ical length section,of the completeimproved churn. Fig. 3 illustrates in perspective view the ring for the removable cover of the improved churn. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show separately the walls a, Z), and c of the churn shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the cover detached.

In all the figures the same letters refer to the same pieces.

The improved churn consists of a barrel or case A, preferably of wood and provided with two pivots X and Y, fixed to the center of its end walls.

The side wall of the churn is provided with a circular opening B, having a metallic ring 13 screwed or fastened to the same in any suitable manner. The inside of the said churn A is divided by a partition-wall made up of several segments. Theinner diameter of said ring Bis calculated so as to be somewhat larger than the breadth of each of the separate segments, so that the latter can be passed into the barrel through the circular opening B, surrounded by the said ring B. Two grooves A and A provided on the inside of the barrel A at diametrically-opposite points of its inner circumference, are intended to hold in place the said partition-wall. Supposing the partition-wall to consist of three separate segments a, b, and c, then the said segments may be passed through the opening B one at a time, first the one end segment a, then the opposite end segment 0, and, lastly, the center segment I) of the wall. The said segments a, b, and c are provided with suitable holes or outcuts, so as to act in the same way as the usual heaters of churns. The said opening 13 is closed by means of a metallic cover 0, having a handle 0', which is preferably provided on its cylindrical or conical rim with suitable grooves 112- and n, which, in combination with suitable pins or projections 19 of the ring B, form a so-called bayonet-jointed cover. The latter is pressed into the opening B, the pins 1) in engagement with the grooves 01, and then turned, so' that the said pins will slide in the grooves m. The latter being slightly sloping, the cover 0 will be pressed firmly into the ring B and the barrel or churn tightly closed. The cover may be provided with a handle C and formed cupshaped inside, the said on p-shaped portion being preferably filled by means of a slightlyconical disk D, which may be fixed to the central partition of the churn. \Vhen thus fixed in its place, the cover holds the partition firmly in place, and the churn is 'ready for work. The partition of the churn may of course be composed of more than three pieces, provided they may all be passed through the opening and held in place in the manner shown and described. After each operation the said cover may be withdrawn and the partition-wall taken out through the opening to facilitate the cleaning of the churn.

I claim as my invention- The oombination,with the churn-barrel having acircular opening at one side, of aremovable cover for the opening and locking devices for holding the same in place, and a central longitudinal beatingwall having openings therein, the said wall being divided transversely into sections or pieces sufficientl y narrow to be inserted or withdrawn through the hole in the bar-rel and the ends of such sections being received into longitudinal grooves in the inner surface of the barrel, substantially as specified.
