FRANKLIN BALL, OF GLEONA, IOWA.
IMPRVED GATE.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN BALL, of4
Cleona, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description gate; and it consists in constructin g the gate in such a manner that it will be balanced, or nearly so, on its hinges, open and close laterally, like an ordinary hinged gate, and at the same time be capable of being opened by elevating or raising it vertically, the latter mode being resorted to if snow or ice or other obstruct-ions oi' any kind should prevent it from opening laterally.
A A represent two posts, which are sunk in the ground at a suitable distance apart, and B is a post, the lower end of which is provided with a journal, the latter being fitted in a suitable step arranged in any suitable way in the ground adjoining the post A. The upper part of post B has a round or cylindrical portion on which a strap, C, is fitted, to
serve as a guide or bearing for the post B,-
said strap being provided with a bolt, tang, or arm, a, which passes horizontally through post A.
The post B is allowed to turn freely, and to its upper end there is attached, by a screw or pivot-bolt, b, a bar, D, which has two longitudinal parallel grooves, c c, made in its under side, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. In these grooves c c the upper ends of the pickets d are tted and secured by screws or bolts e, passing into the central piece, e', of bar D,between the grooves c c.
The pickets d are fitted alternately in the two grooves c c, and the lower parts of said pickets are secured by screws or bolts f to a bar, E, the rear end of which is secured by a screw .or bolt, g, to the lower part of post B. (See Fig. l.)
The bar D extends considerably beyond the post B, and has a weight, F, secured upon it to serve as a counterpoise for the gate and prevent the posts B and A being subjected to any undue strain under the weight ofthe gate, either while the latter is stationary or being opened and closed laterally; and it willbe seen from the above description that the gate may be opened and closed vertically. It is shown partially elevated in red in Fig. l, the weight F serving as a counterpoise in this adjustment of the gate, as well as in the other.
The gate closes against the post A,-and when the gate is in a horizontal position and opened and closed laterally the several parts are retained fixed by means of a bar, G, one end of which is secured by a screw or bolt,g to the lower rear part ofthe gate, and the opposite end tted on a pin, t', at the upper front part ofthe gate, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
In opening the gate by raising it the bar g is removed from the pin i. In consequence of fitting the upper ends of the picketsI d in grooves c in the under side of bar l), the latter is made to serve as a cap and prevent snow and ice from interfering with the operation of the gate.
I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patentv l. A gate constructed substantially as described, or in any equivalent way, so as to be capable of being opened and closed by raising or lowering it in a vertical plane, when said gate is hung so as to swing and .open and close laterally, substantially as described.
2. The bar D, pivoted to post B, grooved at its under side to receive the upper ends of the pickets d.
