Be it known that I, JUSTIN H. BURD1cK,.a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milton, in the county of Rock, andr in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nuts; and I do hereby declare that the `following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to nuts; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view of my im'proved device in side elevation. Fig. 2is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a View of the blank from which my nut is made.

A, Fig. 3, represents the said nut-blank, consisting of a strip of iron, steel, or other suitable material, the central portion of which is of rectangular form, having an integral extension (marked aand b, respectively) at each end. The extension a is parallel on its upper edge, -with the upper edge of the main portion of the strip A, while the lower edge of the extension b is similarly parallel with the lower edge of said main portion. Each of these extensions has a vertical end edge c and d of alength or height somewhat greater than one-half the height of the main portion A, and the adjacent ends e and f of said main portion are likewise straight and of a height or depth somewhat greater than one-half the height of said main portion A. The lower edge g of the extension a runs at an acute angle from the lower end of the line c to the upper endof the line e, while the upper edge h of the extension b runs at a like angle from the lower end of the line f to the upper 'end of the lined, all as shown in Fig. 3, so that when the ends of the blank are put together one of said extensions a (or b) will exactly ll the space above (or below) the other extension.

In forming nuts from my described blank it is customary to employ a suitable die or dies, within which the ends of the said blank are brought together, forming a more or less complete ring, which may then be placed within other dies to give the required hexagonal or other shape to the exterior of the nut, (as well as the crown B when desired;) but these dies and the method of placing the blank or ring within them form no part of my present invention, as the said nuts may be formed fromthe described blank by hand as well as by any suitable machinery. When the ends of the blank have been brought together and the nut shaped therefrom, as shown and described, the bore of the nut is tapped in the ordinary manner, and the described end extensions a. and b form a lock, which prevents undue lateral spreading or opening of the nut, when the same is screwed upon a bolt, while at the same time the nut is capable of sufficient separation in use to serve as a lock or spring nut, the inherent elasticity of the nut tending always toward the original closure shown in Fig. l, and hence causingthe nut to always tightly grip and hold the bolt on which itis placed.

)Vhile I have shown and described the ends of the main portion of the blank and of the extensions thereof as straight or vertical, and the inner edges of said extensions as being oblique or at an acute angle to the horizontal, which is my preferred construction, it will be understood that I do not limit myself thereto, as all these. lines may be varied at will, so long as the slit in the nut extends from the top of the nut to a point below the longitudinal center thereof, (indicated by the dotted line i in Fig. 1,) and thence laterally to a point above said center, and thence downward to the bottom of the nut.

Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A nut-blank consisting of a strip of metal the ends of which are formed with integral extensions, one parallel at its upper edge with the upper edge of said strip, while the lower edge of the other extension is parallel with the lower edge of said strip, and the inner edges of said extensions being formed on oblique lines extending from a point below to a point above the longitudinal center of said strip.

A nut provided with a slit extending from the top of said nut to a point below the the county of Milwaukee and State of fiscenter thereof, and thence laterally to a point consin, in the presence of two Witnesses. above said center, and thence downward to the bottom of said nut, substantially as set JUSTIN H' BURDICK' 5 forth.
