SIGNAL DEVICE FOR TELEPHONE PAY-STATIONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,650, dated February 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I,- WILLIAM GRAY, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal Devices for Telephone Pay-Stations, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.

My invention relates to the class of devices that are adapted for use as a telephone callstation for the purpose of providing for the automatic collection of a toll for the use of the telephone; and my object is to provide a device that will facilitate the sending of the sound-signals that denotes at the pay-station the payment of the prescribed toll.

To this end my invention consists in details of construction of the several parts making up the apparatus as a whole, and in their combination, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail view in side elevation of a set of telephone-instruments, with part out in section to show construction of such parts. Fig. 2 is a like detail view in side elevation of a set of telephone-instruments with part cut away to show construction.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a telephone, and b, the call-bell, on the hook of which the telephone is usually hung when not in use.

0 denotes the transmitter, and d the battery-box, these parts being of usual form and construction and connected up in the ordinary manner. In addition to these parts, there is provided a signal-box e, within which is arranged a suitable signal-sounding device 40 f, that in this instance consists of the coin two transmitters are employed, one into which the sound of the voice is thrown and the other inclosed within" the signal-box, the object of 5 5 this being to provide for the certain sending of the signal that denotes the payment of the toll, and this is done by inclosing this transmitter in the same box where the signalsounding device isllocated. The same general object can be attained and the transmitter Within the signal-box may be used for the transmission of speech by providing a trumpet 70, so that it projects from an opening through the wall of the signal-box directly over the front of the transmitter. When the transmitter is located within the box, it is certain to convey the sound of the signal, and is an improvement on the device that forms the subject-matter of a prior patent issued to me April 22, 1890, and numbered 426,266.

In this prior device a deflector is used that w extends from the signal-box and terminates nearly opposite the transmitter, and in case the latter is of an adjustable kind it is liable to be lifted out of a position in front of the deflector, and for that reason interfere with the clear transmission of the signal that is sounded within the box. By preventing such a removal of the transmitter a greater cer- 8 tainty in the sending of the signal is attained.

I claim as my invention 1. In combination, in a telephonenpay-station, the automatic signalsounding device and the transmitter located within the signal- 8 5 box, all substantially as described.
