SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,393, dated February 23, 1892. Application iiled November 2l7, 1891. Serial No. 413,202. (No model.)

.To all whom it may concern:

Bev itknown that I, EDWARD I. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridley Park, county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coin or Check Controlled Devices, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in coin or check controlled devices; and it consists of a series of boxes or receptacles adapted to contain pomade, perfumery, or other article or articles, and a check or coin receptacle having mechanism therein whereby any desired box or boxes may be opened by the introduction of a coin or check, one or more, in said receptacle.

Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of the interior of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on line a: fc, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical central section of one of the boxes on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a sectional View of a portion of one of the boxes on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the device. Fig. 6 represents a vertical section of a portion at a right angle to Fig. 2 on line z a thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a stand having secured thereon a central check or coin receptacle B, having a surrounding series of vessels or boxes C, adapted to contain pomade, perfumery, or any other article or articles. Each of the said boxes C has hinged to it a spring-actuated cover or lid D, having a lip E thereon, which latter is engaged by a spring-catch F to hold it in closed position.

The receptacle B isprovided with a slot G for the entrance of the check, and within the receptacle is a follower I-YI, which is held in elevated position by a coiled spring J. On the sides of the follower H are projections K, adapted to engage lips on the springs F of the boxes C, so as to remove said springs from engagement with the lips E of the lids.

In order that the boxes O may be opened at differenttimes or by a different number of inserted checks, the lips L are placedv in different places on the springs F of the re` spective boxes. That on the box No. l is placed so that the insertion of a single check so depresses the bed I-I that the projection K thereon engages the lips L of the spring F, thereby releasing the lid of said box, while the lip L of the spring F of box No. 2 `:requires the insertion of an additional check, or two in all, while that of No. 3 requires the insertion of three checks, and so on for each numbered box.

In the figures in the drawings seven checks are necessary to open the boxes Nos. 7, 8, 9, l0, and 11,'these all having the lips L of their springs F on the same plane and are all opened at the same time. The follower H is pressed downwardly by a spring H which serves to keep the projection K of the follower in proper position for registry with the lips L of the springs F.

It will be seen that the number of checks required to open a box depends on the location of the lip L of the springs F of the box and that one or more boxes may be simultaneously opened, if so desired, by having the said projections on the same plane.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A series of boxes with lids anda common check-receptacle having means within the same and projecting into the boxes for opening one or more of said boxes by the insertion of checks or coins therein, substantially as described. a

2. A series of boxes having spring-lids and springcatches for said lids and a central check-receptacle having a follower with projections thereon, said spring-catches having lips at different heights adapted to be engaged by said projections on the said bed, said parts being combined substantially as described.

3. A series of boxes havinglids with sp1-in gs for opening the same and spring-catches for closing them, a common check receptacle havinga follower therein with supportingspring and provided with projections extending into said boxes and adapted-to engage lips on said spring-catches, said parts being combined substantially as described.
