ABRADlNG-CYLINDER FOR POLISHING-IVIACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,226, dated February 23, 1892.

To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, ANsoN P. BOARDMAN, of lVatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in AbradingfCylinders for Polishing-llachines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention is embodied in devices for securing sand-paper to a polishing or abrading cylinder.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end View of a cylinder having my improved device, the parts being shown in position for placing the sand-paper on the cylinder and attaching it thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal axial section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking toward the right. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal View, partly in section, of a fragment of the cylinder, takenv on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragment of the device, including a clamping-bar andits support. Fig. 5 is a transverse section `on line 5 5 of Fig. 2 looking toward the right.
The cylinder consists'of a shell 10, rigid heads 11 11', and a partition or intermediate head 12. The cylinder is supported and carried on the centrally-piercing shaft 13, the several heads being provided with rigid hubs 14. for strengthening the construction.
For securing the sheet of sand-paper 15 to the periphery of the cylinder a longitudinal slot 16 is provided in the shell 10, and suitable recesses are formed in the several heads opposite and adjacent to the slot 16 for the turning of therends of the sand-paper into the cylinder through the slot and for a clearance for the cushion 17 and for the clamping mechanism. The cushion 17 consists of a sheet of felt cloth or other equivalent material, the ends of lwhich are carried through the slot 16, and are turned against the adj acent edges of the cylinder and are held permanently thereto by bars 18, secured to the cylinder conveniently by screws, as indicated in dotted lines.
To provide for attaching the sand-paper to the cylinder, a section 10 of the shell is provided with flanges 19, by and through Which it is hinged on the larger partof the cylinder by means of the shaft 20, passing loosely through the cylinder-heads and through the flanges 19. Arms 21, integral with flanges 19, are provided at their extremities with antifriction wheels 22, which engage and ride li'mitedly on cams 23, rigid on the seglnental arms 24, loose on the hubs of the heads 11 1l. These segmental arms 24 are provided with segmental racks 25, which mesh with pinions 26, fast on the shaft 20. A spring-actuated pin 27, movable through the head 11., enters a socket therefor in the arm 24 and locks it in position. The pin 27 is provided with a transverse pin 28, bearing on a cam-face 29 on the head 11, whereby by the rotation of the pin 27 it is withdrawn from the arm 24.
For clamping the sand-paper to the cylinder longitudinal clamping-bars 30 are provided, which are supported movably opposite the bars 13 on the bars 31. The bars 30 and 31 are let into recesses therefor, respectively, in the cylinder-heads and in the flanges 19. The bars 31 are movable endwise in their seats in the recesses in the heads and ilanges, respectively, and are each provided at one end with a lug 32, in which a screw 33 is j ournaled, which screws turn by their threads, respectively, into the head.11 and flange 19. The screws 33 have rotary motion only in the lug 32, being held against endwise movement by collars 34: thereon on both sides of the lug. The outer ends of these screws are faced to receive a suitable key thereon for rotating them. Pins 35, fixed in the bars 31, enter diagonal or inclined slots 36 therefor in the bars 30. being held against such movement in one case by the arms 37, secured rigidly thereto and bearing movably against the head 12, and in the other case by the blocks 3S, secured rigidly to the bar and bearing movably against the flanges 19. By means of these devices the sand-paper is clamped to the cylinder as follows: The section l0 being thrown outwardly in the position shown in Fig. l, the sand-paper is placed about the cylinder, and the ends are inserted between the bars 18 and 30, and thereupon by turning the screws 33 the bars 31 will be moved longitudinally and the clamping-bars 30 will be correspond ingly moved outwardly, radially clam pin g the ends of the sand-paper between the bars 1S and 30 firmly. I/Vhen the paper is so secured to the cylinder, the section l0 is returned to its normal position, in the manner hereinbefore described.
NVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-v 1. In a cylinder to be covered with sandpaper in a polishing-machine, which cylinder' is fixed on a shaft, a longitudinal section of the shellof the cylinder hinged on the heads of the cylinder, so as to be capable of being swung outwardly, providing an opening into the cylinder, substantially as described. l
2. In a cylinder to be covered with sandpaper, a section of the shell of the cylinder hinged on the heads of the cylinder, arms affixed to the section, and movable cams adapted to be forced against the armsand bring the hinged section to its seat and retain it there, substantially as described.
3. In a cylinder to be covered with sandpaper, a hinged section of the shell, and arms rigid thereto adapted to bear against cams arranged on arms rotatable on bearings about l the shaft of the cylinder, which arms are adapted to be so rotated as to throw the cams with pinions meshing with the racks on the segmental arms, whereby by the rotating of the shaft the segmental arms are revolved, substantially as described.
5. The combinatiomwith a ,slotted cylinder and a section of its shell hinged thereto and arms projecting therefrom, 'of segmental arms provided with cams adapted to engage the arms on the swinging section, and a spring actuated pin movable in the head of the cylinder and adapted to enter one of the segmental arms and lock it in position, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with the shell of a slotted cylinder, of clamping-bars arranged to be forced outwardly radially against theshell of the cylinder, clamping the interposed ends of the sand-paper thereto, substantially as described. Y y
7. The combination, with a slotted cylinder, of `radially-moving clamping-bars and endwise-moving bars provided with pins entering oblique slots in the clamping-bars, whereby the clamping-bars are forced outwardly radially by the endwise movement of the pincarrying bars, substantially as described.
8. vThe combination, with the shell of a slotted cylinder, of clamping-bars arranged to be forced outwardly radially against the shell of the cylinder and clamp the interposed sandpaper thereto, endwise-moving bars having pins entering oblique slots therefor in the clamping-bars, and screws journaled revolubly onlygin lugs on the endwise-movable bars and turning in relatively-fixed parts ofthe cylinder, substantially as described.
9. The combination, with a slotted cylinder having a hinged section of its shell adjoining the slot and means for bringing the section to its seat and locking it there, of clamping devices other than the devices for locking the hinged section of the cylinder adapted to clamp the ends of the circumferentiallyplaced sand-paper against the inner surfaces of the shell of the cylinder, -substantially as described.
