To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES AXEL DAHL, a subject of Oscar II, King of Sweden, now
residing in Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button Hole Stitching and Barring Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifi cation, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates, especially, to the work-clamps and clamp-plate; and it is to be used in lieu of the clamp-plate and clamps described in the Patents No. 450,844 and No. 450,950, dated April 21, 1891, and to be operated by mechanism described in the last patent, No. 450,950.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a clamp-plate and workclamps having the features of my invention Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the said clamp-plate and work-clamps inverted. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, showing its relation to the traveling and transfer-plates. Fig. 4 is a vertical section upon the dotted line a; a: of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 illustrates in section a modie fied form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a crosssection upon the dotted line y y of Fig. 3. Fig.7 is a view to illustrate the relation between my improved clamp-plate and workclamps and the operative devices described in said Letters Patent No. 450,950. Fig. 8 is a View, part in elevation, of the mechanism shown in Fig. 7; and Fig. 9 is a View, partly in cross vertical section and partly in elevation, to illustrate the connection between the work-clamps and the barring mechanism de scribed in said Patent No. 450,950.
I have shown only such parts of my improved button-hole stitching and barring machine as are necessary to properly connect them with the new work-clamps and clamplate. p A is the bed of the machine, prepared as a slideway for the slide-plate A, which has intermittent periods of movement and rest communicated to it therein byacam, as described in the said Patent No. 450,950. Upon the feed-plate A is mounted the traversing plate A This is attached to the feed-plate A and is operated by a cam,as described in the said last-named patent, and it carries or supports the clamp-plate B and work-clamps. The clamp-plate, instead of being made in two parts, which are separable upon the plate A is in one piece-that is, it is not separable. It is secured at its frontend to said plate A by a central pivot b. It has in its rear end the long recess 12 It has also the rearwardly-extending arms 17 to which are pivoted to move laterally or transversely of the plate the work-clamps O G. Each of these work-clamps comprises a block 0, to the under surface of which extends forward a plate 0', having upon its inner edge the inclined or wedge surface 0 This plate 0' may extend to a point beneaththe presser-foot, or it may end with the Wedge.
To the upper surface of the block 0 there is attached a spring-plate 0 which carries at its forward end the presser-foot c The block 0 is connected by a pivot to its holdingarm 12 to permit the presser-foot to have a lateral or transverse movement upon the clamp-plate. The extent of this movementis limited by a pin c1n the clamp-plate, and the slot 0 in the arm tends. A
I have described one of the work-clamps. The other is substantially like it and does not need further description, excepting as hereinafter indicated. They are moved and held toward each other by springs. There is one for each of the blocks 0, and it is represented in one case or with one block asa flat spring h, of the block and having an extension hf ,;:at its front end, which the plate along the recess 11 The workclamp O has additionally the arm D. This arm extends through the recessd in the plate B and connects with the plate a. It extends upon the under side of the plate B to a position to be operated by the barring lever or arm E, which is like the lever F, described in 0', into which the pin exfastened at its rear end to the" side the said last-named patent and need not further be described here. The extent of lateral movement of this clamp-plate O and its arms is not limited by a pin and slot. It has a greater range of movement than that of the presser-foot C. This is for the purpose barring the button-hole.

The clamps are closed upon the work and spread at the beginning, and during this movement, as described in said patcut, and by the same mechanism-namely, by, means of a push-bar 0 having a wedge-v shaped front end c". and a rear upward extension 0 which extends into the path of the cam 0 upon the shaft 0 (see Figs. 7 and 8,) so that the rotation of'the cam causes the bar to be moved forward to separate the two members of the work-clamp by coming into contact withthe wedge or inclined surfaces thereon immediately after the operation of the cutter in cutting the button-hole.
The clamp-plate is held looked upon the plate A in any desired position by means of the block F, which has a section. f, entering a notch f in the end of the plate, and which also has a slot f through which a screw-stud 3 passes. This stud, slot, and the nut f serve to adjust the block upon the plate in any desired position. As theclamp is pivoted at b to be moved or swung laterally, it follows that by moving the adj usting-blockF laterally upon the plate A that the clampplate and clamps are simultaneously adjusted or moved and their transverse position varied relatively to the cutter and anvil.
' It is not always necessary to use the arms 0' between the presser-foot and the work-plate.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a slight modificationin the method of supporting the arms a and I have also shown therein the plates 0', integral with the block 0, instead of being made separate therefrom. The arms 0 instead of being fastened to the upper surface of the blocks 0, are represented as pivoted at heels 9 (see Fig. 6) to said blocks, one only of said arms and said blocks being shown. The block is also represented as having a hole g for holding a coil-spring g which acts against the under surface of the clamp-arm c to move it upward and hold it in its elevated position. The wedge c is formed upon the-side of the block instead of the arm 0', and is thus thicker and has, therefore, greater wear.
Having thus fully described myinvention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a button-hole-stitching machine, the combination of the feed-plate A having feed movements, substantially as specified, im-
, parted to it, with the clamp-plate B, attached to said feed-plate to be movable with it and having the long recess b extending from the rear end of the plate forward, and the transversely-movable clamps O 0', carried by said clamp-plate B, as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the feed-plateA, having feed movements of the character specified imparted to it, the clamp-plate B, attached to said feed-plate to be moved therewith and having the long recess b extending from its rear end forward, and the clamps O 0, each of which comprises a block 0, pivoted to the V clamp-plate by avertical pivot to swing or be turned laterally, and an arm 0, having an operative wedge 0 upon its inner surface attached to said block a, and a spring-arm 0 also attached to said block and carrying at its forward end a presser-foot 0 over the forward part of the arm a, and a spring for maintaining the said arms 0' c in position, as and for the purpose described.

the clamp-plate B in one piece attached to said feed-plate to be moved therewith, the clamp O, pivoted at its rear end to the said clamp-plate to a stop for limiting the extent of said lateral movement, a spring for holding and maintaining it in a given position, and the clamp O", pivoted at its rear end to the said-clampplate to be movable laterally thereon, a spring for maintaining it in a given position in relation to the clamp-plate and to the clamp O, and an arm connected with the clamp O, by which lateral movement is imparted to it and through it to the clamp C, as and for the purposes described. 7 i

said feed-plate and adjustably secured to its rear end to the said feed-plate, the said clamp having the long recess 11 extending from its rear end forward, with the clamps C C, pivoted to the clamp-plate to be movable transversely thereon in opposition to positioning-springs, and said positioning-springs, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the feed-plate A, the inextensible clamp-plate B, pivoted at its front end to said feed-plate A, adjusting devices seoured to the said feed-plate A for adjusting the rear end of said clamp-plate, and the clamps O O, pivoted to the clamp-plate B to be transversely movable thereon and adjustable simultaneously with the rear end thereof, as and for the purposes described.

The combination of the feed-plate A, having feed movements, substantially as specified, imparted to it, the inextensible clampplate B, attached to the feed-plate to be movable with it and having the recess 19*, and the laterally-movable clamps O 0 carried by said clamp-plate B, and each of which has an under rest for supporting the material upon each side of the button-hole slit, and a presser-foot to bear upon the upper surface of the material 6 and the spreadingclamps C 0', each 0f 10 and clamp it against the under rest, as and for which comprises a lower plate or rest 0' and the purposes described. an upper plate or presser-foot c and each of 7.
