.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WENDEL VONDERSAAR, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
ROWLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,960, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed August 20, 1891. Serial No. 403,242. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WENDEL VONDERSAAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State;
of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rowlocks, of which the following is a specification.
' The object of my said invention is to'provide a rowlock for canoes or such like light boats which use a single oar or paddle of the double-ended variety, which will support the weight of such oar or paddle and steady it in position, thus relieving the boatman of a large portion of the labor which has heretofore attended the use of such oars or paddles.
This invention will be first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is aperspective View illustrating my invention and its use; Fig. 2, a central sectional view of the same on'the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional View thereof looking upwardly from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the boat; B, the seat 3 O, a step in the bottom of the boat; D,a standard mounted on said step; E, the rowlock, and F the paddle or oar.
The boat A, seat B, and paddle or oar F are or may be of any usual or desired form and construction, and will not, therefore, be further described herein, except incidentally in describing the invention.
The step 0 is secured in the bottom of the boat, and has an upwardly-extending stem, which enters the hollow standard D and secures and supports said standard in place.
The standard D is or maybe a piece of ordinary pipe or tubing, and is mounted on the stem of the step C- and extends to the appropriate height to support the rowlock. It is adj ustably secured on the stem of the step by a set-screw d or otherwise, as will be readily understood. It is preferably further supcar or paddle, as in an ordinary row-boat, and
also the advantage of facing in the direction of motion, as with a canoe. The weight of the oar or paddle is borne by the standard.
and he is relieved to that extent.
The adj ustability of the standard on the step renders this invention convenient to be used by persons of varying stature.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a boat, of a cen tral standard and a rowlock mounted on the upper end of said standard and adapted to receive a double-ended oar or paddle, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a boat, of a step secured in the bottom of the boat, a stand ard adj ustably mounted thereon, and a forkshaped rowlock mounted in said standard, adapted to receivea double-ended car or paddle, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a boat, of a step mounted in the bottom of the boat, having an upwardly-projecting stem, a hollow standard adjustably mounted on said stem, a stay 12, secured to the seat and extending out .and staying and supporting said standard, and a rowlock mounted in the upper end of said standard.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 10th day of August, A. I). 1891.
