W. B. MALCOLM. PLUSHING TANK.
Patented Fgb. 9, 1892'.
IIIIIII MMM/"l lllllllllllllllllll Il c E 'nnmlw f Wvlfrtesses yfrom the inlet-pipe C in such a manner that U NITD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM B. MALCOLM, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
FLusHiNG-TANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Let/ters Patent No. 468,725, dated February 9, 1892.
Application nea Aprn 2t, 189i.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAXTER MAL- COLM, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in I`lushing-'l`anks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a flushing-tank which will occupy but little space and may be arranged in connection with a closet in such a manner that a large Volume of water will be discharged into the bowl of the closet with little or no noise; and it consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations ot' parts hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my iinproved fiushing-tauk with a portion broken away to expose the construction. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail showing the method of pivoting the semicireular bucket.
A is a rectangular tank made of any suitable material and made narrow, so as to occupy but little space. \Vithin this tank a semicircular bucket 1l is placed, the sides of the said bucket being flattened, so as to fit within the tank. This bucket is supported on pivots located in thesides of the tank and made substantially as hereinafter explained.
C is an inlet-pipe located at the end ofthe tank A and provided with an ordinary balleock. j
E is a curved spoilt extending from the inlet-pipe C to a point close to the bottom of the bucket l. This spout conveys the water practically there is no noise made.
F i's a pipe extending from the bottom of the tank A to the bowl G, wherein two openings H, are made so as to admit the water from the pipe F into the bowl in two streams. By placing the tank A in the position indicated, close to the bowl G, the water from the tank has but a short distance to fall, and consequently there is practically no noise produced.
I is a sleeve fitted into the bucket B and suitably attached thereto, its ends projecting through the sides of the said bucket.
Serial No. 389,953. (No modal.)
`J is a spindle which passes through the sleeve I. 'lhe inner end of this spindle J is journaled in the socket K, fixed to the'inside of the tank A. The ends of the hole through the sleeve I are squared or formed in an irregular shape, so that the portion ot the spindle J fitting into the portion of the said hole will not revolve therein. The outside end of the spindle J is similarly shaped to receive the crank-arm L.
M is a sleeve bored to fit onto the enlarged portion a of the spindle J. This sleeve M projects through a hole made in the side'ot the tank A and is provided with a flange b to butt against the inside of the said tank. The portion of the sleeve M projecting through the tank I is screwed on its outside to receive the fianged nut N. 'lhe flange of this nut butts against the outside of the tank A, the sleeve M being held rigidly to the said tank by its Harige I), butting against the inside, and the flange of the nut N on the outside thereof. lVhere an ornamental casing is placed around the tank A, Iform the uut N, so as 'to project through the said casing, screwing it on its outside to receive the fianged nut O,which butts Aagainst the outside ot the said erna` mental casing.
I isa erank-handle fixed to the spindle J, by which handle the bucket B may be tipped as required.
That I claim as my invention is- Iu a fiushing apparatus, a bucket B, a sleeve I, fitted into and fixed to said bucket, and a spindle'J, fitted into said sleeve and provided.
with a crank-handle I, in combination with a tank A, a socket K, fixed to the inside of the tank and receiving the spindle J, the sleeie M, also receiving the spindle J and having a fiange b and projecting through the tank, and the nutl N, securing the sleeve M on the tank, substantially as and for the pu rpose specified.
"loronto, April 8, 1891.
