Be it known that I, ADDISON WV. IIITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Syringe, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to vaginal syringes 5 and it has for its object to provide an instrument for the purpose of washing or medically treating the vagina which will be simple in construction and one which may be used with facility and ease; also, to provide a syringe havin g means whereby the walls of the vagina may be dilated for the usual purpose to insure a thorough washing or injection from the injected iuid.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of a syringe-nozzle and a guard or shield carrying radially-hinged arms operated by a reciprocating movement of said nozzle and constructed and arranged in the novel manner hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vaginal syringe constructed in accordance with my invention, the arms being expanded. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ot' the same, the arms being collapsed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, the arms being expanded. Fig. at is arsimilar view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the locking-slot.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shield or guard, the same being constructed of hard rubber or other suitable material that will not be affected or corroded by the liquids which come in contact with it. The said Ashield or guard is elliptical in shape and adapted to bear upon and rest upon the labia, preventing the escape of the washings except from directly beneath the vagina, and the shield is provided with a central perforation 2, from which extends the depending tubular neck 3, having near its lower edge the closed bayonet-slot et, the purpose ot which will be soon apparent.
A series of spaced lugs or elevations 5 project above the face of the shield and are arranged around the central perforation therein. The said lugs are provided with the perforations e and are beveled upon their inner edges, as at 6, in order to accommodate the ends of the expanding arms 7 and the operatingnozzle. The arrangement of the inner beveled lugs also provides a back reservoir, from which the iiuids escape through the communicating discharge-perforation S, which perforation extends through the tubular neck 3 and receives in its lower end the dischargenozzle 9. The said discharge-nozzle by suitable tubing conducts the discharge to any convenient receptacle. The expanding arms 7 are each provided with the lower flared ends 10, terminating in the reduced portions 11, which are hinged to the top of the shield or guard by means of the pins 12 passing therethrough and the perforations in said lugs, between which the ends of said arms are placed. Two of the expanding arms 7 are of a rounded sector shape, and when collapsed together form a semicircular portion, the circle of which is completed by the remaining hinged arm approximately semicircular and provided with the flat face 13, which is adapted to register with the inner fiat faces 14 of each of the sector-arms, thus completing, when collapsed, a tapering rounded dilator flared at its base a'nd providing for a ready and easy insertion within the vagina, and which when within the same may be easily expanded, as described. The meeting faces of the opposing sector-arms are cach provided with the longitudinal rounded grooves or recesses 15, while each ot said arms are further provided with the lateral notches 1G at their lower inner edges and the inwardly-projecting ends 17, extending from said notches at right angles to the arms and having theinnercurved edges 18, which, when the arms are collapsed or closed, form a curve within which the nozzle-tube 19 is located. Said nozzle-tube 19 extends through the tubular depending neck of said shield and is provided at its lower end with an ordinary shouldered end 20, over which may be placed ordinary tubing connecting the nozzle-tube with a suitable syringe for the purpose. The upper end of said nozzle-tube 19 terminates n a reduced nozzle 21, having the perforations 22 and provided with the exteriorly-threaded portion IOO 23, that is designed to accommodate the annular iange or ldisk 24, screwing thereover and upon the shoulder 25 at the upper end of the nozzle-tube from which the nozzle arises. When the dilater is collapsed, the reduced nozzle is designed to snugly fit within the longitudinal grooves 15 in said arms, and thus be entirely inclosed within the rounded sectional dilater during insertion, while said annular iiange is adapted to take within the lateral notches 16 in each arm and rest within the inclosed space above the shield-perforation. It can be readily seen that after the instrument is inserted within the vagina that by pressing the nozzle-tube upward the pressure of the annular flange upon the upper side of said receiving-notches will cause the dilater to expand and the arms thereof to dilate the walls of the vagina while the iuid is injected within the same. A downward pull of said nozzle-tube bears the {iange upon the inwardlyprojecting ends of the arms and tightly closes the same in upon the tube and nozzle, as set forth. The instrument is held in its dilated and closed positions by means of the set-screw 26, screwed into said nozzletube and working within the closed bayonetslot 4 in the tubular neck, so in operating the tube it is slightly turned and forced upward or downward to-dilate or collapse.
A modification of the manner of hinging the dilater-arms to the perforated lugs upon said shield appears in the drawings, and is designed for the purpose of greater strength and durability. The lower ends of the arms are provided with the slots 7, within which are inserted the met-al angle-pieees 7b, which are flush with the extreme lower ends of the arms and extend forward, as at "7C, beneath said ends beyond the points of the pivot, so as to form corresponding lateral notches 1G and the inwardly-projecting ends 17, as described. The nozzle-tube and flange work in the same manner within said angle-pieces.
The construction and operation of my improved vaginal syringe is thought to be apparent without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vaginal syringe, a shield having a central perforation, a series of dilating arms hinged upon said shield and having registering faces provided with longitudinal grooves, and a reciprocating nozzle projecting through said central perforation and connected with and operating said arms and adapted to be entirely inclosed Within the grooves in the same when collapsed, substantially as set forth.
2. In a vaginal syringe, an elliptical shield having a central depending tubular neck, a series of radial spaced lugs upon said shield, registering and rounded dilating arms hinged between said lugs and provided with inner v notches, and a reciprocating nozzle working within said neck and provided with an annular flange adapted to engage said inner notches, substantially as set forth.
3. In a vaginal syringe, a shield having a central perforation, a series of rounded dilatin g arms having fiat registering faces hinged to said shield and provided with longitudinal rounded grooves upon their meeting faces, lateral notches and inwardly-projecting ends at their lower extremities, a reciprocating nozzle-tube having a reduced nozzle end adapted to be inclosed within the longitudinal grooves of said arms, and an annular fiange or disk secured upon said nozzle-tube and adapted to engage said lateral notches and inwardlyprojecting ends, substantially as set forth.
4. In a vaginal syringe, a shield having a depending tubular neck provided with a closed bayonet-slot at its lower end, a series of dilating1 arms hinged to said shield, and a reciprocating nozzle workingwithin said neck and provided with a set-screw engaging said slot and connected with said arms, substantially as set forth.
5. In a vaginal syringe, a shield having a central perforation and a tubular neck depending therefrom, spaced lugs having inner curved beveled edges upon said shield around the perforation therein, a discharge-spout communicating with the space inclosed by said lugs laterally through said neck, a series of dilating arms hinged between said lugs and provided with lateral notches, inwardlyprojecting en ds having curved edges and registering longitudinal grooves, and a reciprocating nozzle working within said neck and provided with an annular flange adapted to engage said notches and ends, said nozzle be: ing adapted to be inclosed within said arms, substantially as set forth.
