Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL MOULTON, OF BO IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC PACKING FOR T STON, M ASSACHUSETTS.
HE EXTERIOR OF PUMPS IN DEEP OIL-WELLS.
To all whom it may concrn:
Be it known that I, JOEL MoULToN, of the city of Boston, in the County of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have made new and useful improvements in elastic packing for filling the space between the tube and the shaft in oil or other wells, and which is in-. tended to prevent the water from running down the sides of the shaft to mix with the oil, which office is usually performed by what is termed a med-bag, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the acconpanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a View of the sections of elastic packing, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the sections.
The nature of ny invention consists in a tube and conically projeetingfiange of elastic material, one or more of which are slipped upon and tightly embrace the tube, the projecting fiange expanding into the crevices of the shaft. To make the device more effective,
several of these are interposed one upon the other, the lower or cylindrical part of one fitting upon the internal fiange of the one beneath it.
A is the cylindrical portion of the packing, and B is the fiaring or conical fiange, which fits against the sides or wall of the shaft 0. D is the pipe or tubing upon which the packing is fitted, and E is the inner or central flange, upon which the chamfered lower edge of the upper section is imposed.
The fiange B of the packing, or of the series of pieces, expands into and fills all the irregularities on the side of the shaft by reason of its own elastcity and the pressure of the superincunbent water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The packing of elastic material one, or more made to embrace the exterior of the tube, and having a flaring flange or cup, as described, adapted to eXpand into the inequalities and crevices of the shaft or well under the pressure of the superincumbent water and its or their own elasticity, substantially as described.
