Description

(No Model.)
W; A.' KEMP. DAMPER.
Wifnwwew [7'2 r0250)".
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. KEMP, OF TORONTO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THE KEMP MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DA M P E R SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,285, dated February 2, 1892.
Application filed September 80, 1891. Serial No. 407,305. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ARTHUR KEMP, manufacturer, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to dampers; and it has for its object to provide a device of a character which can be cheaply and easily manufactured and one in which although the damper rod is formed separate from the damper-plate, yet said damper-rod may be readily adjusted thereto and securely held in position, so that the turning of the damperplate is insured and securely held in its turned position; and it consists, essentially,
of the device hereinafter more fully set forth,
and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of a damperplate. Fig. 2 is a view of the opposite side.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The invention consists of adamper-plate 1, of any suitable size and shape, and shown in the drawings to consist of a circular plate of metal fitted with apertures 2 to allow the smoke, &c., to pass through when the damper is in its closed position, and spindle-sockets 3, formed in its body, through which passes the damper-rod 4. On one end of the damper-rod 4 is a handle 5, fitted with a spring-clamp 6, to press tightly against the stove-pipe when the damper is placed therein.
It will be noticed by reference to the drawings that the middle portion 7 of the damperrod 4 is arranged at an angle to the horizontal diameter of the damper-plate 1, along which diameter and parallel with it lies the outer portions 4 of the damper-rod 4. The middle portion 7 of the outer portions 4: are joined by means of ogee curves.
Formed in the damper-plate 1, close to the middle portion 7 and parallel with it, is an aperture 8, through which passes the short arm 9 of an L-shaped plate 9, the long arm 9 of which is riveted to the side of the damperplate remote to that on which is secured the damper-rod 4B. This L-shaped plate 9 is so of the damper-plate 1, so that the middle portion 7 of the damper-rod 4. will be permitted to pass across the aperture 8 when the damper-rod is being connected to the damper-plate 1, or when it is being removed from the same. In connecting the damper-rod 4 to the damper-plate 1, the short arm 9 of the L-shaped plate 9 is sprung back until the edge of the short arm 9 is flush with the face of the damper-plate 1, and as soon as the middle portion 7 of the damper-rod 4.- has cleared the aperture 8 the short arm l is permitted to spring back into position and securely hold the damper-rod a in place.
The pressure of the spring-clamp (5 against the stove-pipe prevents the damper-rod 4 passing through the sockets 3 further than is desired. The middle portion 7 of the damper-rod 4, besides providing aineans for securing the damper-rod to the damper-plate, is also' a means for turning the damper-plate into any desired position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stove-pipe damper, a damper-plate provided on one of its faces with a stop arranged at an angle to the horizontal diameter, in combination with a damper-rod working in bearings and having its central portion engaging with and arranged at the same angle as said stop on the face of the damperplate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a dampenplate provided with a slot arranged at an angle to the horizontal diameter, an Lshaped plate fastened to the damper-plate, the short arm of which extends through said aperture, and a damper-rod working in bearings formed on said damper-plate and having its middle portion arranged at an angle to the horizontal diameter of the damper-plate and engaging with the short arm of said L-shaped plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Toronto, September 12, 1891.
