SEPARABLE BUTTON.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miles City, in the county of Custer and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Separable Buttons,of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in separable buttons of the character set forth and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 434,802, granted to me August 19, 1890. The separable button as described and claimed in said Letters Patent involves two parts-a head-piece nd the button properhaving a tapering shank adapted to enter a concentric tubular extension of the headpiece and retained bya spring locking-shoulder to be displaced by a wedge-shaped disk, the operation of which, when pressed by the finger, is to spread the spring lockingshoulders to permit the button to be with drawn. The construction shown in that patent is entirely operative and presents many points of desirability; but I have found that the same is capable of improvement, whereby it may be manufactured more economically in the quantity necessary to supply the demand; and the object of my present invention is to effect this improvement in the manner presently described.

My invention consists in the separable button comprising, as before, the hollow headpiece, disk-shaped in plan view and having a short concentric tubular extension in its lower side or collet, perforated centrally in its upper face-plate and carrying in its interior a circular locking device comprising segments adjusted together and held in place by a surrounding spring. A wedge or button tapering in its lower part is retained in the central aperture afforded in the locking device and projects through the central perforation in the face-plate, and its operation un; der the pressure of the finger is to spread apart the segments forming the locking device against the resistance of the retainingspring. The button is provided, as in the case of the patent above mentioned, with a concentric shank, the extremity of which is provided with an annular shoulder adapted to be engaged by the locking device when in its normal position under action of its spring.

The operation of inserting and withdrawing the button, so far as the manipulation is concerned, is the same as in the case of my previous Letters Patent.

In the drawings, Figure]. is a horizontal central section through the headpiece. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a button with all theparts adjusted together; and Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views, respectively, of the faceplate and collet.

A represents the button provided with the concentric shank B, having its inner end reduced and provided with a shoulder t. 111- stead of the form shown in the present drawings, the shank may have the form illustrated in my said Letters Patent, according to the preference of the manufacturer. The headpiece comprises, preferably, a centrally-penforated face or top plate 0, turned over at the edge to form a flange .9, and a centrally-perforated collet D, turned up at its edge to form the flange 5, adapted to fit closely within the flange 3, and it is provided by preference with an integral concentric projecting tubular extension 0' of a dimension sufficient to receive the shank of the button, Supported between the faceplate and collet of the headpiece, but not necessarily fixed therein, is the locking-plate E, comprising segments 2), held normally together by the surrounding spring F. Each segment is provided on its inner edge with the upward extension 0, the lower extremity of which affords a shoulder, While the outer end of the extension tapers to produce, when the segments are adjusted together, a wedge-shaped opening. The dimension of the aperture obtained in the plate E, when the segments are adjusted and held together, is such as to provide a shoulder to act against the shoulder 25, formed upon the shank of the button, thus serving to hold the button against withdrawal after the same has been introduced. A push button G, preferably made hollow and at its lower edge enlarged into a flange n, as shown, is inserted from below through the central aperture in the faceplate 0 and rests normally in the upper part of the tapering or wedge-shaped opening between the flanges 0, formed in the lockingplate E.

The operation of the device is as follows: The push-button G having been introduced into its aperture, the locking-plate segments adjusted together within the spring F and introduced between the face-plate C and collet D, the face-plate and collet may be soldered or otherwise secured firmly together. The shank B is thereupon introduced through the tube 0" until its shoulder is caught in the shoulder formed in the locking-plate, the segments of the latter being separated against the resistance of the spring during the introduction of the shank, and the button is thereupon complete and the parts irremovable, except upon a positive action exerted against the push-button G. The effect of pressure against the push-button is to cause an expanding of the locking-plate, releasing the shank and permitting the button to be withdrawn.

The locking-plate may be made in as many segments as may be desired, whether formed as segments of the same plate radially divided or as separate pieces, and the spring may assume other forms than that shown. The push-button may be varied in its construction, as mentioned in my previous Letters Patent, and the head-piece may be made of a single piece of metal or several pieces, according to the election of the manufacturer.

It is deemed unnecessary to recite the various modifications which are possible; but I desire it understood that such variations as I have mentioned and others of a similar character not departing from the principle of the invention as covered by my claims are intended to be included therein.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A separable button comprising, in combination, a button A, having a shouldered shank, a hollow head-piece perforated for the reception of the shank, a locking-plate within the head-piece, comprising radially-extendin g spring-controlled sections 19 and having the 'central annular shoulder, and a wedge engaging and expanding-the locking-plate, substantially as described.

2. A separable button comprising, in combination, a button A, having a shouldered shank B, the hollow head-piece O D, having central perforations opposite to each other, a locking-plate E, composed of segments 10, held together by a surrounding spring F and presentin g the tapering central opening terminating in a shoulder adapted to engage the shoulder on the shank, and a push-button entering the tapering aperture of the locking-plate and extending through the central opening in the upper face-plate of the head-piece, the parts being arranged to operate substantially as described.
